Continuing our journey across Cinnabar's protected reserve, our guide, Ranger J.Taylor gave us keen insight into tracking down illusive fire type Pokemon. Rolling across the black volcanic sands in our Jeep we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a lone Ponyta cantering across the desert. Not wanting to scare it, we followed at a safe distance, but we knew that it would likely lead us to a herd nearby.

James pulled the jeep to a halt and assured us that it would be safer to travel by foot from now on. In the distance the sky began to darken and we heard the rolling boom of thunder. James insisted that we couldn’t stay long as the storms on Cinnabar were known to be rather dangerous.

We carefully climbed over the dune to be met with a stunning sight. Drinking from a lake was a sea of flickering flaming Ponyta.

It was beautiful. As we all began to get some photographs, one of our group became impatient, wanting closer shots and began down the slope. Ignoring our protests edged closer and closer to the Pokemon. Unbeknownst to him, one of the protectors of the herd had spotted him. Suddenly a large Rapidash charged. As it galloped, clouds of embers bloomed from its hooves with each step and flickering flame roared from its tail. Shocked, the man fell backward and the horse reared up on its hind legs in a threatening display!

Out of nowhere a bright flare shot between the man and his attacker. The bright red clouds billowed into the air and the Rapidash quickly backed up. In a flash, the Ranger tucked his flare gun into his back pocket and sprinted to his side. Before the Rapidash could see what was happening, he had grabbed the man by the arm and dragged him back toward the Jeep.

I looked back to see the flare die down and the Rapidash whinny in frustration. As another clap of thunder rippled through the air, the mare turned toward her group and led them away toward the mountains…
