Poor James laid on his side in a field as his driver and fireman were seeing if he was hurt. They tell him that the accident wasn’t his fault, it was the wooden brakes he was fitted with, they were always useless. Thomas arrives with the breakdown train and angrily pulls the troublesome trucks away hoping punishing them will teach them a lesson. After all the trucks have been cleared away, the two cranes lift James back onto the rails. Thomas then pulls him back to the yard. The Fat Director tells him that he’s extremely proud of him and that James will be sent to the works to be fitted with proper brakes, a new tender and an new coat of paint, and as a reward for helping him, Thomas shall have a branch line all to himself!

Now Thomas is as happy as can be running his own branch line from Knapford to Ffarquhar, he puffs backwards and forwards on it all day with his two coaches called Annie and Clarabel. He’s never lonely, Edward and Henry stop quite often and tell him the news. Gordon is always in a hurry with the Express, but never forgets to whistle “Poop-poop”, and Thomas always whistles “Peep-peep” in return.
