I really like the use of the dark blue / grey color combo for the suit, it's works perfectly!

This was a character with an outfit that was entirely the same shade of gray. I knew that wouldn't shade well, so I made the shadows dark purple on a layer at 50% opacity at let the distinction in hue suggest a greater distinction in value.

That's an interesting way to do it! I should try some more ways to use color variation than eyeballing it. I was just reading somewhere a method that used opacity mixed with layer styles to create color shades that I wanted to try too!

Layers of opacity do work so long as you know the theory. Purple will read as darker than yellow even if their brightness values are the same. Grays will look more yellow next to purple, too, which you may have noticed in this sprite.

Yep, I really need to mess with this! After I finish up some of these projects I should really work on some theory studies. It's been too long!
