Layer set-up to make this kind of image:
Top layer: clipped to the layer below, draw on it with white.
Middle layer: solid black, layer mode set to Multiply.
Bottom layer: some kind of rainbow! I just blob on colors and smudge them around awhile until satisfied, but you could really do anythingβ colorful stock images might look nice too! :3
Β Β Β Β Β β If you wanted to do it in fewer layers, draw with white directly on the BLACK layer instead of making the top layer. PROS: smaller file size! CONS: instead of using the eraser tool you have to "erase" by painting black; makes copy-pasting or moving the drawn part harder too. β
I used to sometimes get these scrape-art kits from craft stores where you'd start with a black flat board and carefully scrape away portions of the top layer to reveal the rainbow (or foil, etc) underneath! It was just so fun to see the colorful part appear as you went along. But I wasn't super good at them, and they were slightly messy (scraped off black bits EVERYWHERE...) and they cost money.
Then I realized I could do the same thing with digital art! This also lets me get wild with custom brushes (the "stars") and symmetry rulers (I used both a five and a two here) and so on.
