This is just one method of making cosplay automail. There are many other options, variations, and different techniques that may or may not work better for you, depending on your budget, skill set, amount of free time, desired result.You are always free to post any ideas, questions, or alternate methods of making automail. The more resources we all have, the better!

if anything isn't explained in the tutorial [and I tried to cover EVERYTHING... x_x ], feel free to ask any questions. :]
how many bottles of fabric paint did you use?
I believe about 4 silver, 2 black [of the 2-oz size].

Anime Detour 2011 edit: BJ was wearing her automail glove [the same one featured in this tutorial] around Detour this year, and a random passerby said to their friend--"look! it's like the tutorial online!" xD
Amusing as this was, it was a little weird to have someone recognize our automail-glove design from a dA post I made now-years ago. o_o;;

eheh, I have no idea where to get a red jacket without logos >.>;;;; [Walmart? Target? Kohl's? ... these could be places to try...]
the red coat that's in the tutorial was made by following (and modifying) a pattern.
we used the coat in the pattern Simplicity 4923 , but then modified it to get rid of the slit in the back, make the sleeves more billowy [I think we actually sewed the sleeves upside-down, just so that they were wider at the wrist than at the shoulder], and added a hood. :]
I think Simplicity 5840 is really good for long coat, but for Ed, you'd have to shorten it and REALLY take it in [since even their smallest size of that pattern is HUGE].
The directions in both of the patterns are pretty easy to follow; it tells you what to do step-by-step to make your coat. ^^

Well damn, I wish I knew about this before attempting to make Wonderflex automail last year! (I don't recommend that, btw)

I've been avoiding automail because of how difficult it seemed, but this is simple AND beautiful! Great job and thanks for sharing the how-to!

Me and my friend are thinking of making automail using fiberglass or carbon fiber, and mounting it to a long glove. But the first couple of steps would do us good to mount to, and painting the end of the glove as opposed to mounting little bits of foam or something to the glove will save time and hassle. Will link you to it when we are done if you want, but we probably won't be done for 4-8 months. We aren't in any hurry.
But thank you again for the tutorial, really handy.

Seriously.
This couldn't have gotten a DD at a better time xD I'm FINALLY going to cosplay Ed after five years of fangasming over the series, and need to make the automail on my own, but can't do shit with cardboard/foam/whatever without seriously hurting someone. This automail looks awesome, you did a great job with it, and THANK you for the tutorial <3 you saved my butt.
