Description This is just one method of making cosplay automail. There are many other options, variations, and different techniques that may or may not work better for you, depending on your budget, skill set, amount of free time, desired result.
You are always free to post any ideas, questions, or alternate methods of making automail. The more resources we all have, the better!

requested by ~Akastuki-sensei
a tutorial for the automail made for ~bloodyjackfaber 's Ed Elric cosplay

if anything isn't explained in the tutorial [and I tried to cover EVERYTHING... x_x ], feel free to ask any questions. :]

how many bottles of fabric paint did you use?
I believe about 4 silver, 2 black [of the 2-oz size].

download for higher resolution.

if you make automail using this tutorial, please post a link to your finished result! I'd love to see what you made.

1/31/10 EDIT: a DD?! O__O
well, THAT was completely unexpected. . . . but I'm really glad you guys are finding this tutorial helpful! ^^
thanks to all of you~~and especially to `Hanratty-Stock & ^Nyiana-Sama !!

Anime Detour 2011 edit: BJ was wearing her automail glove [the same one featured in this tutorial] around Detour this year, and a random passerby said to their friend--"look! it's like the tutorial online!" xD
Amusing as this was, it was a little weird to have someone recognize our automail-glove design from a dA post I made now-years ago. o_o;;

In all truth, the automail was ~bloodyjackfaber 's idea, and the tutorial was ~Akastuki-sensei 's idea---all I did was make the two of them!
But I'm really glad you like it! Thanks very much!

You're welcome. It's been a while since I watched FMA, now that I think of it. O.O At least I read the first volume, recently. The anime has a whole crapload of fillers.

k-ee-ran In reply to TwilitKitsune [2010-02-04 05:50:14 +0000 UTC]

Have you tried FMA: Brotherhood? It's still airing now, and it follows the same general plotline as the manga [instead of going WAY off in another direction.. x_X] -- it's also got a lot less filler, too. ^_^ I think it's a lot better than the original series though the original series isn't exactly the "original"...x_x

TwilitKitsune In reply to k-ee-ran [2010-02-04 22:30:18 +0000 UTC]

How isn't it exactly the "original"? XD
I haven't tired it yet - I'd probably prefer to read/watch it in order.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

k-ee-ran In reply to TwilitKitsune [2010-02-05 22:29:55 +0000 UTC]

the FMA series isn't the "orginal" because the manga came before all, and therefore manga is what's canon. ^_^
it just gets interesting when you have a first series that went WAY off the deep end, and then a second series that follows the canon fairly well.

eh, nodnod. I understand, in the same boat with you. (it's just that I've finished reading all of the series that's been released thus far. ^^ )

TwilitKitsune In reply to k-ee-ran [2010-02-10 03:27:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but the manga and the anime were based off of one another, so TECHNICALLY, the first anime/manga is the "original". XD

Yes, but I mean like I usually will not watch anime. There's about 4 or 5 I like. The art is cool, though ^_^

Ahemhem? O_o Where did you get THAT info...? The manga was released in August 2001; the anime was released in October 2004.
And the anime diverged from the manga around volume 3, after Hiromu Arakawa requested that the anime have a different ending from the manga....
Eh...sorry, I'm just a massive nerd like that. >_>;; You can ignore me if you like.

Really glad you like. ^^ And, aye, I love Arakawa's drawing style as well. :]

Heh, I dunno, I just thought about it. xD OHHHH, I SEE! >_< Wait, how are the endings different?
And don't say you're a nerd just because you like FMA/anime/manga. EVERYONE does, anyways.

I thought her art was pretty good. There has been some better ones, however.

k-ee-ran In reply to TwilitKitsune [2010-02-14 21:42:54 +0000 UTC]

The endings are different...oh wow... I'd have to start at the beginning to get to the end. **warning: massive spoilers follow.**
In the manga, the Philosopher's Stone was created thousands of years ago, in a country called Xerxes, by Homunculus (aka Father), who at the time was just an artificial life form in a bottle. Homunculus used a slave by teaching him how to read and write and teaching him ALL about alchemy, giving him a name, and, eventually, using his DNA to create immortality both for himself and this ex-slave, now known as von Hohenheim. Both Homunculus and Hohenheim contained the Philosopher's Stones within their bodies, in the form of the souls of every single human who had been living in Xerxes.
Hohenheim, upon realizing his country had been completely slain and destroyed by Homunculus, did quite a bit of weeping, a lot of journeying, and eventually taught alchemy to both Xing (country to the East) and Amestris.
Homunculus, instead, founded the country of Amestris under the intention of creating another transmutation circle with it, as he did with Xerxes long ago, but this time, he would use the circle to open the Gate of Truth and rip god down from the heavens, bringing god into his immortal body, essentially making himself god.

Thus...the plot, since Hughes's death, has brought us all around Amestris, up to the Northern Mountains and Briggs, out to the East to the ruins of Xerxes, has involved the splitting and the reforming of Mustang's team, several Easterners who came to Amestris to bring home the Philosopher's Stone to give power and influence to their tribe/village but ended up running with Ed and co. as they go to try to stop Father. In addition, Ed and Al have gone back to the Gate of Truth several times, twice of these times seeing Al's body but having to leave it there and promise to come back for it. Several homunculi have been killed [apparently if you kill them enough times, they just stay dead], and the origins of the homunculi are completely different, as they are the children of Father -- they are a part of his nature (one of his sins), given the body of a human. Greed has died and come back and it's been implied that he's died again; Lust, Gluttony, Envy, and Sloth(? not sure about him) have died and stayed dead. Sloth, by the way, has absolutely no connection to Trisha Elric. He is, in fact, a very bulky and Hulk-like fellow, who is responsible for making the transmutation circle around Amestris. Wrath is not a whiny little kid, but is actually King Bradley, the Fuhrer, who had been an orphaned human that had a philosopher's stone injected into him, forming a homunculus. Pride, since he's not the Fuhrer, is actually the Fuhrer's son Selim, who is a creepy as heck little kid.

Meanwhile, as the characters we know and love have been joining forces [Scar, Ed, Al, Mustang, Hohenheim, Izumi, Mei, Lin, Lanfan, several human-chimeras, and even Barry the Chopper are all fighting on the same side] to stop the Fuhrer, an attempted coupe has happened and failed, and...as the manga is still ongoing and hasn't yet finished, the latest chapter has left us off on the mother of all O________O notes, because it looks like Father has won.

...that was all the manga. in the anime...Hohenheim got on with this chick Dante, they decided to make Philosopher's Stones cause they didn't want to die, Hohenheim ditched Dante, Dante swore revenge, homunculi were born from people attempting human transmutation, the homunculi also somehow decided to follow Dante, Dante stole many bodies of young girls, and she eventually sent Hohenheim to our world, Al was turned into a philosopher's stone by Scar, Ed and Al became fugitives that were harbored by Winry and protected by Mustang. Ed and Al then went underground to kick Dante's butt, which ended up in Ed being killed by Envy, and philosopher's-stone-Al used himself to bring Ed back to life [including with his arm and leg back]. A little game of tag-you're-it begins, kind of, in which Ed and Al both die for each other to bring the other back, several times over. Meanwhile, the homunculi decided to ditch Dante, with Envy coming to our world, Gluttony eating Dante alive, and Wrath running off on his own, which included him getting outfitted with automail by Winry. In the end, Al is a restored human living in Amestris, but with his memories of the last three years gone. Ed is a human missing an arm and a leg living in our world, but has been outfitted with prosthetics by his daddy Hohenheim, who is now a magician-person in our world--and the two brothers swear to each other to find a way to get back together. This ends up coming about in the FMA movie, where Nazis go black magic and open the door to Amestris, killing Hohenheim and using Envy to open the door. On the Amestrian side, Al and Wrath go to open the door to our world, to try to bring Ed back, and Wrath ends up sacrificing himself to stop Gluttony from eating them both, and to open the door. Then, all hell is unleased as these Nazis use undead soldiers, the Amestrians end up fighting them off, and then they close the door between our worlds, but not before Ed and Al head over to our world to shut the door from THIS side. In the end, we're left with Roy and company establishing a new government system in Amestris, and Ed and Al in our world being all "yaaaay we have no idea how we'll get by without alchemy, but we can do this because we're together! ^__^ "

...sooooooo.... the endings are very different.

to your nerd comment. woot.

yupyup, I agree with the better art...there is much more beautiful, detailed, or otherwise art out there...but I love Arakawa's work for her story-telling ability. ^^

I only go to local ones [there are about four, between my state and neighboring states...], but I know some people travel a loooong ways to go to bigger cons. x_x

eeeeep. I'm sorry. x_x

(I just got a mental image of Italians watching Hetalia.... o__o;; xD )

Maybe, though...if you can get enough fans together, you can start a con in your area? ^_^ I know that one of the cons not too horribly far from my place was actually started by a university's anime club, about ten years ago... It started out really really tiny, less than a hundred people, but it's been growing steadily ever since.

DRUNKENunicorn756 In reply to k-ee-ran [2010-02-04 13:37:27 +0000 UTC]

I would if i could, but i may have a few little problems :
1. I live in the country side, in a group of villages, so I can't really make a convention here. It would be easier if i lived in our capital or something. :[
2. Well, nobody .... dosn't even really know about my anime fetish. >_> well. maybe i'll tell them one day. maybe. I don't know. i kinda feel like my bf will kinda make fun of me - and besides, it worked out well so far. Maybe when i get older and i go to an academy or a university, i'll go to Italy for a few days. ^_^

Thanks for all your help ~ <3

very nice I wonder if it's possible to make Automail out of Metal Scraps that probably be awesome, but you can slip in on your arm in pieces and straps hold it together ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

k-ee-ran In reply to Shad-Wolf [2010-02-14 21:49:53 +0000 UTC]

That would be awesome to make automail out of metal scraps, yes...the problem is that involves cutting and shaping metal, which is both expensive and requires equipment I don't have.
But, if you could find a way to make that happen, I would very much applaud your mad awesome skillz. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shad-Wolf In reply to k-ee-ran [2010-02-14 22:47:18 +0000 UTC]

^^ but if you were to find a Metal Craftsman to make the parts then it would be possible, there are quite alot of metal craftsmen out there that can make just about anything from metal scraps. I've seen people make stuff out of car parts and making a statue of it. I myself don't have the experience of doing anything like that. if I did I'd of made one by now, lol

The automail is great!

I hope this doesn't sound rude, but next time, don't worry about hair colour if you can't find a wig. Your natural hair will still look great, but the hair spray you used just looks cheap and that kills the effect of your awesome work!

Anyhow, the automail is amazing and you did a great job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

k-ee-ran In reply to Kinkaid-Design [2010-02-14 21:52:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad you like the automail!

I appreciate your comment, and I don't take it as rude. ^^ Some people would rather have a similar-looking hair color that's done cheaply than have very obviously incorrect color...for example, BJ's natural hair is dark brown. Doesn't work very well with Ed. It was our first time trying to spray her hair before, though--we've done it on wigs, and it actually worked out fairly well for those--but by the time we'd seen what we'd done to her hair, it was one of those "oh god what have I done..but too late to turn back now...onward to the con!" kind of moments.

I'm trying to bring a philosopher's stone next time, to add to my cosplay...heheheheh. >] Be afraid of the flames. Be very afraid.
