Well, there's more than 2 versions of Hero Corpse.  There's at least like 5 or 6 body volunteers to choose from  But these are the first / main two.

The story is basically they had a rare genetic condition that was killing them over time, kind of a Stephen Hawkins thing where it hits the body and eventually moved into the brain.  Rather than surrender they took all kinds of crazy scientific risks, stole research from others doing even crazier, more villainous research, and eventually found a way to transfer their consciousness into other bodies...  The process which prepares the bodies in many ways perfects those bodies and imbues them with dark powers.  As well as basically turns their brains into all but a blank slate.  Once inhabited, the body is active and all but when not inhabited they are basically brain dead lumps...  There's really no limit to how many "volunteer" bodies could be around and available...

Oh wow... so dark!  Really only how they choose to use their powers makes them a hero, they could so easily be villains!  This makes them really interesting

Yeah...  I mean the volunteers all have grave illnesses... And they know they are signing up for experimental treatments and donating their bodies to science if things don't work out.  And the experimental treatments do, on occasion save these people... But yeah, the fact that they may continue on as part of a body farm, not so much even in the fine print. lol
