Description
A quick tutorial in restringing a BJD. It's a basic type body, nothing fancy. Just covers the basics.I am not an expert on BJDs, I do not consider myself an expert but if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.
Appologies about the photo quality. It got dark when we started doing this.
I injured myself so ~MrBlueSuit helped me out.
Edit: Added a darker font to make it clearer to read. Hope that helps!

Sorry, I don't really understand what you are asking very well....
When I restring a loose doll, I find it easiest to take it apart, and then to tie the elastic since I can see the length I need alongside the doll. I wouldn't advise cutting the elastic unless you're really sure about it. In my doll, the excess just sits in the head too.
You can use the same elastic, and it should in fact last for a couple of years as long as you take good care of it (ie. don't get it wet, don't leave it in a position to be stretched out etc)
In order to get the right tightness on the elastic, lay the pieces out in the right order. The elastic should stretch from the feet to the neck, and should have tension (in the tutorial I have put a picture of this... it's about 9 pictures down)
I hope I have answered your questions! If not, please ask me again and I will do my best to answer.

Oh yes, sorry. I felt as if I didn't ask it very clearly. I was really tired then.
Thanks for telling me that. I was almost going to buy a whole restringing set. And its good that i wont have to cut it either.
Thank you for everything.

Thank you! It's not as bad as it looks. The worst thing that happens is you mix up the left/right pieces and have to start again. But it's really easy to know because they won't sit right in the joint.
Don't worry though! Also it's quite difficult to break a doll while restringing (unless you drop it or stomp on it) because resin is actually pretty strong. It's a really easy process and when you get used to it, you'll just be doing it as often as needed, with no problems at all.

Heehee maybe he just doesn't like his photo to be taken...
But if he's kicky, it usually means that he's too tight. You can either check if the elastic can be loosened, or just keep pulling the elastic to stretch it. A good way to stretch it is to put him into a kneeling position, prop him up with pillows or clothes or something so he can't fall over easily, and then leave him like that overnight. It helps to just stretch that body elastic.
That girl sounds really interesting!

Ah, I appreciate this.
I'm about to be a first-time BJD owner,

Your tutorial was very helpful to me. Thank you! :-D

Ooh yay for new doll! What sculpt is he?
Restringing seems so terrifying but it's really simple and easy to do and there's not really too much of a problem when it comes to putting them back together.

I've gotten a Crobidoll Yeon-Ho. :3
USPS says he is in New York,
so he should be here any day now. >_<
I really hope I don't have to restring
him right away, but I hear it's a very
coming together experiance with your doll. 8D
If I have to, this was extremely helpful. <3

Most of the times, you don't have to restring them straight away, which is good. Usually they are too tight when they're new, so you have to loosen the elastic by pulling on their arms/legs or you can prop them up in a kneeling position overnight to stretch the body string.

Aw, wish I'd known that earlier. xD I restrung him a long time ago - I did well! My utensils of choice were a keyring, a needlenose and some rubberbands, and a snapped elastic hair-thing. And a stick of eyeliner to make sure the hook didn't get lost. Haha. I read this thing the entire time! Thanks again - very helpful.

this is a really helpful tutorial i think i might try it ^-^. my doll is so floppy at her midsection but her one arm keeps snapping back towards her chest. also did you just attach the s hooks to her wrist and foot joints? thanks

kagen-no-tsuki In reply to VampireAngel667 [2010-07-22 19:32:50 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. Definitely give it a go. It's not as bad as it looks.
Sorry, I don't really understand the question too well... the hands and feet should have either a loop made out of the resin, or a metal loop screwed into them. The s-hook attaches one end onto that and the other end onto the elastic.

VampireAngel667 In reply to kagen-no-tsuki [2010-07-23 14:48:12 +0000 UTC]
oh I see, for my doll she has a little bridge made out of resin inside the joint so the elastic has to go under and over it. that why shes so confusing to re string XD

Your doll is Abio Angel, right?
Yeah I think they don't have s-hooks or something, so you have to string them backwards. Alternatively, you can use a strong thread/string or even a wire like beading wire to attach in place of an s-hook. Only downside is you have to keep cutting off the thread when you want to restring, but since you shouldn't be restringing too often then it's okay. Older dolls didn't used to have s-hooks, and were attached in place with string that knotted from the hands/feet to the elastic. It's a little easier to restring that way, rather than having to thread the elastic through them first.

Very cool. ^_^ I only read it for fun, since I already know how to string my boys. Instead of a ribbon, I use thin crafting wire since it's stiff and easier to put through the body parts.

kagen-no-tsuki In reply to RikuHikari-Neo [2010-07-20 01:21:34 +0000 UTC]
Wire can be so useful! I tend to use ribbon because I have difficulty grabbing hold of the wire, and I can wrap the ribbon around my hand and pull it.

RikuHikari-Neo In reply to kagen-no-tsuki [2010-07-20 17:05:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's my only vice with the wire. I can get it to wrap around my hand since it's malleable, but then it turns into a razor as I try to pull on it.
Maybe I'll start to use ribbon instead, and just use the wire to pull the ribbon through the body. ^_^ Thanks for the ideas!

I just wanted to say that this is on of the MOST CLEAR tutorials I've come across. Very nice job.
However, I wonder how much different the process is with three bits of elastic? Do you know? My doll has one piece for her arms, and one piece for each leg. Three.
I am going to be buying more elastic (That's the plan, at least) so I could just do it in this method, but I was wondering if you might know the differences... Is one way better than another?

kagen-no-tsuki In reply to Bad-little-Demon [2010-07-20 01:20:17 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you like it.
In my experience, actually with separate pieces of elastic for each leg, it's actually a lot easier to string as you don't have to worry about it slipping and becoming uneven.
One way isn't better than the other, it's just down to personal choice.
I hope that's answered your questions!

Don't worry too much about breaking them when you're restringing them! Resin is pretty tough. Only part you have to watch out for is the fingers, as if you squeeze them too tightly in your hand, they can break, but even then it's fairly difficult to do that.

This is great! Now I actually understand how to remove hands and the like to put jewelry on, seeing as I was kind of scared to do that.
One question, though, seeing as you look to be somewhat knowledgeable about this. My doll is having trouble with having her arm bent in front of her -- Would this be a case of having too much tension in the arms, or just the doll's design?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
kagen-no-tsuki In reply to Reuleaux-triangle [2010-01-13 23:04:54 +0000 UTC]
That does sound like her arms are a little tight. Is she new? If so, the best thing to do would be to keep stretching her arms out to stretch the elastic a little more. You may be able to restring, but if she's new there might not be enough excess to loosen it.
