Description
A quick tutorial in restringing a BJD. It's a basic type body, nothing fancy. Just covers the basics.I am not an expert on BJDs, I do not consider myself an expert but if you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.
Appologies about the photo quality. It got dark when we started doing this.
I injured myself so ~MrBlueSuit helped me out.
Edit: Added a darker font to make it clearer to read. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for this. I've had my doll for some time now but I've only just now started to fix her elastic and dress her up. I've been trying to find everything I can for restringing since I've never done it before. This is very helpful!

If you are looking for a six inch bjd, try searching Tiny BJDs.
The sizes are usually as follows:
Trinity - 120cm/47in
1/2 Scale - 90cm/36in
Uncle - 70-89cm/28-35in
SD - 50-69cm/20-27in
MSD - 40-49cm/16-19in
YoSD - 23-39cm/9-15in
Tiny - Under 23cm/8 in
Also, you can buy relatively inexpensive BJDs from companies such as:
Island Doll
Mystic Kids
Angel of Dream
Bobobie
Resinsoul
(There are others, and DoA actually has a list of discount BJD companies. You can also check second hand on ebay.)
Or you can buy an Obitsu. They aren't strung (they have internal skeletons), but they do have ball joints and are super poseable. ^-^ They actually have a 6in/11cm doll. Obitsu aren't made of resin-- they're made of ABS and Silicone.
Dollmore also sells a strung ABS BJD, but she's 12"-- a bit big for your specifications.

this is great! I can't afford a BJD nor find one in the size i need (6in) so I intend to take a wooden drawing mannequin, and restring it to make it bend better as well as mold the head. So this will help immensely

Thank you so much! I really needed a restringing tutorial since I knew having to restring a BJD was inevitable, especially since I want to try making one. (Yw for the run-on sentence dere.) Proof that looking at other people's dolls and mentally drooling is worth the time.

just one question is there a good length or weight of elastic to use for SDs?. dont want to buy something that is to short and not have enough to do the bod and arms or to thin and could snap while pulling
I am really new to this and this will be my first time restringing him and I am very nervous. He was adopted (not new). according to your description His arms are to tight because they snap out of position and his legs are way to loose cuz he buckles and cant seem to hold his own weight unless i get him perfectly balanced. (really hard)
I also heard of sueding or something to help with joints but not sure what that entails.

I accidentally let go of the foot elastic while the hook was still on it. Now I cannot get back out. Should I just disassmble from the arms first, then?

Just wondering, I'm very new to BJDs, why do you have to restring the doll if there's only a small part with a mark? Couldn't you just scrub it off - or is it necessary for it to soak first?
π: 0 β©: 2
Dollsuu In reply to CaptainLeda [2013-12-10 23:57:59 +0000 UTC]
There are many reasons to restring a doll other than cleaning it, such as sueding, tightening, and changing old strings.
The tutorial simiply said that it would be a good idea to clean some marks off, but that wasn't the point of restringing the doll.

nekrorat23 In reply to CaptainLeda [2013-11-21 08:55:40 +0000 UTC]
I think that if you scrub it off, there is a chance that it gets damage on the 'skin'. And 'healing' that isn't easy in my opinion.Β
Sorry for my poor english ;u;... Β

Hi first thank you for the tutorial I have a couple of questions i hope i can explain them without confusion. my doll is an older Lutz head on an older B&G body. When you put the S hook through the string at the top of the neck does it only go through the loop without the knot? So does the S hook hold that side of the string above the neck and the knot hold the other side in? I am a bit confused on that part do you keep the loops separate so that both sides of the loop on the hook string stay together to go down through a leg and the same with the knotted side? or do you cross them so you use one side of the knot side with one side of the hook side? What if the string comes off the S hook will it get pulled into the upper body? Also my dolls head is not held on with the slots to turn the S hook into the head to lock it in place. So do I use the S hook to connect the top of the head? There is a thing that has a hole in the center it hangs down from Β the top part of the head about 3/4 of an inch. The Shook slides right into it but I am not sure if that is how I am suppose to hook it in. When I got her I picked her up and her entire head fell off so I didn't get to see how it was attached. It does not look easy to connect it that way so i wanted to make sure it was right before i take on the challenge. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I'm getting my first BJD (Minifee Seorin Girl) in a couple weeks but I was just curious; How do I know when it's time to restring my doll?

First of all, congrats on your first doll! It's always so exciting ^^. If you don't mind, I could offer my answer for this question. Some companies (not many) will actually send the dolls out in pieces, letting you string them when they arrive.
The other time you will restring your doll will be if you feel it is too tight or, especially, too loose. You will know the tension is okay if it easily holds a pose without either snapping back toward the body or simply seeming too limp. If it's too tight and you don't feel like restringing it, a helpful tp I was told when I got my first doll is to tie it in the fetal position for a few days, to loosen the elastic of the string a bit. Hopefully this helped

You could use the string your doll already had if you only took them apart for cleaning or doing modifications. Most of the time string is replaced if it's worn out or way too tight.

This is a real help! I got my doll off Ebay (my mom gave me a $200 limit and it had to come with everything [hair, eyes, clothes] and so I was like "time to go to ebay!" lol) and they shipped her unstrung and when my mom strung her she put the knot in her thigh so I restrung it twice and shes loose. One leg is super tight and the other is super loose and it take about 10 minuits to get her to stand, so now when I feel up to restringing her I'll definatly use this!!

This was very helpful, I am planning on purchasing a DOD DOC Homme Ivan in about half a year or so, so I am doing all of the research now. ... I heard that soaking the doll in warm/hot soapy water was bad for the resin, but I guess it isn't?
.. Thank you so much for this tutorial though, seriously~
