Description
So I submitted my feedback to Deviantart on why I don't like Eclipse. At all. When I saw there was an option to submit a screenshot with the written review, I decided that I might as well be thorough. When it comes to visual design, any sharing of ideas requires visual aids, so I took screenshots and marked them up like a strict English teacher grading an essay. It's not quite as comprehensive as I could make it - there are plenty of tiny details about things like text color and size, border size and thickness, color theory, and the effects of space on aesthetics, but I think I covered the major points.Whichever visual designers Deviantart hired for this know NOTHING about visual design. Everything about Eclipse aggravates the eye's natural way of tracking and focusing. There's either too much empty space or too little, poor (or no) delineation between sections of each page, and (most importantly for ARTWORK) no bordering or framing of any kind to help highlight the boundaries of each piece against the background and focus the eye on its contents. Any text on the page is often left without coloration or stylizing to help it stand out, and it floats around in the background (off on its own, with too much space around it) with no way to clearly connect it to what it's supposed to be a title/header for.
The art "thumbnails" on the main gallery pages are TOO BIG with almost NO space between them! It's not a gallery anymore! It's a teenager's bedroom wall crammed with posters! The original site's thumbnails are just the right size to give a sense of the details, but small enough that the eye can rest on the whole thumbnail and then quickly move on. There's just enough space around them to give a sense of roominess, to set each thumbnail on its own in the center of the gaze, but not so far apart that the eye has to move a far distance before finding the next piece.
Just as importantly as visuals, the original site grouped pages together in ways that were easy to navigate and made sense. You could click on one button to see all your notifications, watchlist updates, and a comprehensive widget that would take you to all your notes and site interactions. The gallery pages have a widget with links for all the art categories and refined searching, grouped together conveniently. In Eclipse, all of that is scattered to the wind, so each page you want to see you have to hunt down elsewhere.
I probably repeated myself quite a few times in this mark-up, especially on words like "focus," "organized," and "negative space." I'm not an artist myself as my gallery shows - I love deviantart for the fantastic art I can find here. I've been here for around two decades. I don't want this great site to die from poor decision-making that drives off creators and audiences.

Thanks for the comparison.Β This is just the beginning of what I hate about Ecliipse.Β I have been at DA for 16 years and have many collections.Β I can't even figure out how to put faves in collection folders.Β This platform just really sucks.Β This is supposed to be more professional?Β I don't even see any by print buttons.Β How is anyone even supposed to buy or download someone's art.Β This is just a disaster.Β

You explained in a very neat and succinct manner everything I hate about Eclipse. I can't look at it for more than five minutes without my eyes starting to hurt.
It used to be relaxing coming to this site to look at art, but the new site just grates my nerves.

That, and a number of other things. Some already implemented a long time ago. I used to browse by search words, to see what was new... back then, DA showed whenΒ something was posted on the result screen. No longer. In the galleries and the fave folder, I need to go to the 'edit' view to see whether any new comments have appeared. I've got a lots of things in different folders in my message centre: now all of it has to go to the 'Save in Eclipse' folder, with no subdivision, as far as I know. I get the feeling they wanted it to look like a smartphone app, but forgot about actual functionality. They want to look more like artstation, which is, as far as I know, less popular... so, what gives?Β Β

Strict? More like a teacher trying desperately to gently let down (not discourage) a student so certain that had "aced" the exam only to have failed miserably. You did an excellent job of pointing out the numerous flaws, and resisted the hardball they deserve.

Lol, thank you. I was trying to keep it somewhat classy and not just blow up out of frustration XD And I only barely touched on some of the major aesthetic flaws, as I'm learning from these comments. There's so much more that could be said.

I don't understand any of this, then!

all those big gray horizontal scroll bars! much more of a dated look than the oft scorned green gruze!Β my problems with eclipse center around the (lack of) functionality, but you've done a great job highlighting the User Experience issues as well.Β eclipse has been such a debacle for the company.Β Β

Covers alot of my issues. The notifications are the only thing not covered of my own complaints.
In current DA it's an exact number with seperated counts of art, comments, replies, favorites and notes.
In eclipse it's a red number that doesn't count,,, something? Perhaps the older notifications I left up as reminders years ago because normal DA puts the newest stuff first so I can do that? I don't even know what order it's in on eclipse because they aren't stacked or ordered by date as far as I can tell.

I would love to see one of these with your opinion on the profile section.(if you have made one I'd love to see it )Β
I've sent the dev team lots of complaints about the user icons being way too small, and the group icons being way too big. And have yet to get response or changes made about them yet.
I agree with everything you've wrote on here, The message section is the real kicker for me. I felt I could maybe put up with Eclipse if the message section was decent or similar to the old one but what they did is not user friendly.Β
I really hope they look at this review and make some major changes. (I doubt they will honestly as sad as that is) I've been on this site for 12 years almost. and I'm sad that I wont be comfortable using it anymore.Β
This is a really nice review and I wish you the best!Β

This is legitimately a perfect case for why Eclipse is so negatively received by members of the community. Everything you've shown here PERFECTLY captures just how much of a mess and eyesore Eclipse is. This is the kind of thing that needs to spread across the website.
Thank you so much for making this.Β Β

You're welcome XD I'm glad you like it. I will, however, disagree with you on one point: There is SO MUCH MORE to be captured than just what I wrote, both about the aesthetic experience and everything else people are mentioning.

And that's not all, there is a lot more!!
Eclipse is way too dark and it also has a version that is TOO BRIGHT (at least for me).
Do you know they are not privacy settings neither? The WONDERFUL da team removed them : ) or just forgot to add them, who knows? It's just pitiful because they are literally letting people know our activity and that is way too personal to be something public.
The Notifications are annoying, are difficult to delete at once! SometimesI receive many feeds, and it's impossible to delete them all at ONCE using Eclipse, I delete them one-by-one and it's annoying and a waste of time, I even leave the notifications there cuz of my laziness to delete them all, which is a problem because I won't be able to difference my old notifications from the new onces.
I'd tell everything I hate from Eclipse, but I don't want to write a comment with over +150 lines.

No privacy settings?
As in like all your personal info will be exposed unlike Old DA?(Cuz Old DA has at least kept my personal info at bay).
Cuz if thatβs true, then thatβs bullshit.

I found how to delete my activity visibility, you just switch to Eclipse and go to the About section, there will be many sections about your activity: comments, +watchs, +watchers, groups, ect. Delete everything you consider personal. ooff
But still, your statuses are still public to EVERYONE, and not just to your +watchers as it normally was...

*sigh* Ikr? if you switch to Eclipse and go to the "About" section (at the left of your page) you will see all of your activity being public, like everyone can know when you submitted a status, who you watched, where you commented, ect. And it's like...
Β Who cares??? Not like that is people's business or anything.Β

All things will appeal to some people. I'm not surprised there are people out there who like Eclipse, but I also believe it will alienate the majority of existing users. For the average human eye, on desktop, the interface is unusable. At least as an art gallery submission site.
