Description

This month's randomized poster selection landed us on the first of the Godzilla anime trilogy, a series I'm forever torn about.  On the one hand I was glad to see Toho finally go into the realm of animation with the Big G.  There are also a lot of elements I really do like about the story, the setting and some of the characters, but unlike most fans I tried to defend the first two films rather steadily, hoping for a satisfying package by the end of the trilogy, and it seems I'm kind of in a minority because I disliked the third entry so much it actually knocked the whole trilogy down for me a few pegs in terms of where the series places in my overall favorites. But hey, every film has its merits and Planet Of The Monsters to me wasn't the worst first step, though the worst thing I could say at the time was just how episodic it felt.  Which, of course, it is. Ok and some of the tech babble, but I definitely didn't hate the movie.

You know, a lot of people are taking the interview with Hiroyuki Seshita out of context and insist he intentionally made these movies different to upset fans. That's not what he's saying at all. Seshita is a lifelong Godzilla fan, and he felt it was important to have a non-fan's perspective to try and make these films appeal to a broader audience outside of hardcore fans. So he told Kobun Shizuno to not watch any other Godzilla movies until the trilogy was finished, that way they would be able to combine the perspective of a fan and an outsider. Seshita was saying that the fact some traditionalist fans have hated the movies at least proves he did succeed in making the movies different, which was one of his goals. He doesn't say anything about how that reflects the quality of the films or even whether these people are justified or not, he is simply saying that it shows he achieved one of his goals with the trilogy.

Seshita and Shizuno also make it clear they were careful to not drift too far from what defines Godzilla as a character. They changed his origin, sure, but kept the basic design and abilities intact and were sure to portray him as a force of nature spawned as a consequence of mankind's recklessness, especially the use of nuclear weapons. Shizuno, even as someone who had only seen two Godzilla movies, was very careful not to ignore the core features of Godzilla as a character and tried very hard to remain true to it.

Honestly, it's ridiculous how so many fans are throwing tantrums over a line from an interview that has been misinterpreted and taken out of context. This trilogy was never about changing things for the sake of being different or intentionally upsetting fans, it was about telling a different story that could reach audiences who were unfamiliar with Godzilla, and Seshita feels that some of the negative reactions the films have received at least show he managed to make it different.

I myself am a HUGE Godzilla fan, and I still enjoyed the anime trilogy for what it was. I honestly don't know if I should be proud of myself for managing to find thrill & joy where most G fans couldn't, or if I should feel like an outsider for the same reasons.

I've been a Godzilla fan for over 30 years and one saying I live by is that there is no Godzilla movie I hate.  There are definitely some that are low on my list, but I love a lot of things about each one, no matter what.  I'd waited for 20 of those years for a Godzilla anime of any kind, since the mid-90s, and I was pretty excited about it finally happening.  I like a lot of the ideas in the anime trilogy, I really do, but to me it's merely an issue of execution.  People who are and are not Godzilla fans I feel were just disappointed because a lot of those great ideas were wasted with the pacing, the long-winded dialog and the rather unimpressive action.  I LOVE Godzilla Earth and the crazy Ghidorah in concept, but they weren't allowed to really perform, just kinda be there.  I've gone on a lot about the negatives, but I do have a lot of things that I appreciate.  The alien races are distinct and interesting.  The futuristic setting is radical and a great set piece for a good story.  Hell, it's the first Japanese Godzilla movie to even feature a romantic kiss, it's a small thing but even that was kinda special.  It just didn't....grab me, in the end, I just don't feel like the directors knew how best to balance the elements they had, but I'm not a fan who is going to go on and on complaining, I try to find the best in every movie and every piece of media the Big G is attached to, so that's why I'll still watch them, make the fanart and appreciate them now and then.

Very awesome layout you came up with there. There are plenty of varied sizes to the monsters and character, but nothing is too overly domineering to control the viewers eyes.

Higher praise than it rates but thank you, I'm really enjoying these poster format entries and want to make them something special, maybe even to put on a table at Fest one of these years.

I could certainly see them doing well for a sale if you keep up with the "must cram everything in the movie in here to make it look awesome" style

Excellent artwork! And yes, I agree that the trilogy had good ideas, but that it just wasn't executed properly. I'd like to see something similar to it, but written and executed better someday, whether it be in animation or live action.

Thanks dude, this one was difficult for some bunch of reasons, but it took about three times longer than I'd meant it to.  I just forced myself to have to stick with whichever of the movies I picked out of the hat whether I really wanted to do that at the time or not, sort of a challenge to give it my best even if I wasn't too enthused about the movie in question and honestly I'm glad I did, this one turned out better than I expected it to, especially with little Filius Junior there.

Your artwork is wicked awesome.

I would have preferred more traditional animation but I could have enjoyed the trilogy anyway except that they teased Mothra for three movies and then we get nothing. And I didn't care for how Ghidora was just three long necks with no body.

Coming from you especially appreciated, Sensei Kent.  I made the choice to stick to whichever movie I randomized no matter what, and in this case I'm glad I did because I am happy with the poster, but I don't always feel the most enthused about the selections, particularly in this case   So it becomes a challenge to find the enjoyment in it and try to compose the best image even if it's from my least favorite films in the franchise.

Also "Tapeworm Ghidorah" was pretty disappointing to me too XD

I totally understand. It's a fun challenge to get a 'random' subject and then try and make it fun.

Is it worth seeing this trilogy?

It really just depends on what you're looking for.  I was going to add them to my collection no matter what of course, but for somebody to whom that mindset doesn't apply it just comes down to whether you want a more traditional Godzilla movie with a good balance of human elements and monster fights or a more human oriented drama with almost no monsters taking up screen time.  All three have their high and low points, but for me the overall execution just didn't satisfy me very much

I guess I'm leaning towards the taste for films with more traditional tones that balance decent human characters with good or decent monster action, something more or less like the Heisei movies were.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes this film, and the trilogy as a whole.

I love all Godzilla movies regardless of what I feel their overall quality to be, it's why I consider myself a "never die" fan as opposed to a die hard, but the anime trilogy's main issue for me was just that I'd been waiting 20 years to see what a Godzilla anime could look like and it seemed to Toho crippled this trilogy from being what it should have been.  If it had been the story of how earth fell to the army of monsters and then went into space I feel it would have been far more satisfying.

Oh boy, Planet of the Monsters. I remember liking it on initial release, since I assumed this was just Act 1 and things would pick up later, but....they didn't, which made this movie worse for me. I don't hate this film, it's far from the worst in the franchise. I really do like some of the ideas this trilogy presents, like Godzilla driving humanity off planet, Mechagodzilla being a city (since I THOUGHT we were going to have a Trypticon/Metroplex thing with Mechagodzilla), and I really like what they did with King Ghidorah, but most of the ideas suffered from very, VERY, bland execution.
(And in one case, that whole sharp plant thing could have been neat, but it NEVER came back)
I heard that one of the directors welcomed the complaints, saying that hearing those from 'traditionalists' proves they made something different.

So, assuming this translation was accurate, he's assuming we don't like it because it's different?? No!

I bring this up because I recently asked a friend who wasn't into Godzilla to participate in an experiment, where I would see if she would have the same issues with Planet of the Monsters Godzilla fans had, proving the difference wasn't the case.

That experiment was a success! She has very similar issues that we do, and not only that, she's a little interested in seeing some more Godzilla (a GOOD Godzilla movie).

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment here, just didn't really dig some of the executive decisions that came down the horn on these.  Like others have said, don't focus on isolating your fanbase to bring in new fans the "expand" the fandom, just make GOOD MOVIES!  This is not hard, Marvel's been doing it for over 10 years.
