Description
Continuing with the Atragon collection, the Bandai Special Effects Chronicles figure of the original Gotengo. This ship is pretty BA, and it's one of the best vehicles in the Toho universe in either era it appeared. What Toho often lacked in special effects it more than made up for often in iconic design, including this ship. Sure we all know it's a model, but it looked fantastic.Commissions open: kaijukid.deviantart.com/journa…

Even though I was introduced and mostly grew up with the Final Wars design, I like the showa design more. I think it's just a case of "less is more". Atragon is on that "non Godzilla" monster movie list I've mentioned in one of your posts about Frankenstein vs Baragon. I think I might bump it up to next on my list. I'm aware the film's giant monster, Manda, has a very small role, and it's more of a science fiction film, but that doesn't bother me. I like science fiction for the most part.
Showa Gotengo is on my shopping list. I'm not really interested in paying an arm and a leg for a actual figure of the ship with a bunch of accessories and play features. I'm really just looking for a simple, less expensive, model for display purposes.

Good point, the less is more philosophy as served kaiju eiga very well. I know design trends change, but I get so tired of how busy tech looks in movies now, like they're afraid it has to look like a design mess to be "cool", but the beauty of many of the kaiju was their natural designs that were complex but not complicated, like Ghidorah's scales or Mechagodzilla's various parts. The same for the ships, they made sense but weren't overly messy.
