I will always think of Shin Godzilla as Destroyah if given his own movie. He has basically the same origin, abilities, growth cycle, threat level, and weakness.
Basically Destroyah 2.0 - "What if we thought of Godzilla as an Enemy Kaiju"
I DO like Shin and GMK for vastly differentiating the "super evil" type godzillas into their own creatures, rather than the rest of the Shinsei which tried to have us root against a godzilla who was for all intents and purposes identical to the one people liked, the Chaotic Neutral / sometimes Chaotic Good Kaiju.

I'm glad someone pointed that out. While I enjoy the Meguirus and Kiryu movies, I hated the whole idea of trying to get us to root against a neutral Godzilla character. Shin at least was evil and had more reason to be rooted against.

Yeah those parts of Shinsei really fell flat to me. G2000 had the same idea in the plot as well.Β It just kept bumming me out and I simply couldn't buy the MC's seething hatred for a creature that was clearly not malevolent, like GMK and Shin. People don't come to a godzilla movie to root against godzilla; he's too ingrained in the public consciousness as a "force of nature" that defends just as much as he destroys. To make people root against him, you have to immediately show that your movie's godzilla is different from the godzilla "you know".
To bring up the old Godzilla Neo terminology, Shin is Godzilla re-imagined as a class 3 with Destroyah's origin, weakness, and overall ability set.
Heisei had this to an extent but it was rarely in the forefront. I think Japan has finally figured out how to do "evil godzilla" though with Shin. I like that Legendary and Toho can have these two simultaneous wildly different takes on the charachter, it really is the best of both worlds now.

I thought the opposite of Shin. Aside from Greco-Roman myths, what sort of gods reside in hell where demons are commonplace? Shin looks like more like hellspawn than a god...though what killed him for me was his ability to fire lasers from his back. That just broke the illusion a bit and just made him a bit OP, which is kind of saying something given the kind of monsters running around in the old films. His ability to bifurcate his lower jaw, on the other hand....*shiver*

I grew up watching Godzilla. I was an 80s girl that wanted to hug the big city stomping lizard and I have never ONCE found him to be scary... until I saw Shin Godzilla. When his mouth split to spew the ray of death, my mouth dropped and I felt.. afraid! Shin Godzilla is my 3rd favorite in the Goji series next to Godzilla VS Gigan and Godzilla 2k.

awesome rendition from the last "Scary version" of Godzilla to date in movies! i mean holly shit he was terrifying as an enemy in that movie, hope we see a sequel of him.
