Description
Twilight was nigh, touching upon Pride Rock and turning the horizon to a line of flame. Upon the pinnacle stood a lone feline with fur the color of cream. Seated with tail tucked around her feet the lioness gazed out across the Pridelands, eyes the color of an early dawn's teal fixated on a fine point. A group of shadows, mere smudges now, were in hasty retreat from the very spot she now sat. Her own daughter had been among them, exiled by her mother. It had been a cold move following a brief battle -- even as a formidable opponent herself Nala hadn't been able to best the lioness who'd trained her -- but it had been necessary. Nala had done a fool thing, bringing her betrothed back to Pride Rock. He'd disappeared shortly after their babe had been born and had, for all appearances, taken the baby with him.Fools, them both.
Perhaps Sarafina's own Scar had his faults, ones even she could not claim blindness to, but he had never up and abandoned those that belonged to him. The reinstated queen dipped her head to her chest, straightening her fur with a few swipes of the tongue. Scratches stung her pelt here and there, but luckily none had savaged her deeply. For her king the lioness had fought valiantly and violently. No quarter had been spared on her former pridesisters, those stupid enough to have betrayed their king. The rains they had claimed abandoned them to Scar's evil had returned, just as Scar had predicted, and the land was already growing lush again. All without Simba.
Hearing the whisper of pads upon stone behind her Sarafina lifted her head once more, face turning so that only her profile was visible as a single teal eye glanced over her shoulder.
"My Queen."
In the aftermath of the battle, Scar had busied himself with making sure everything was in order; that no former pridelander was left behind in the cave his pride would call home now, or the surrouding areas. A snitch in his ranks was the last thing the rightful King of Priderock needed, after all. Simba's pride had been unsually clever this time, though, and had decided not to let anyone in their ranks linger. Good.
The dark lion closed the small distance between him and Sarafina, soundless steps carrying him there swiftly. At his Queen's side, he sat slowly, watching the distant figures with evident satisfaction. Scar himself had barely even been touched this one time, carrying almost no scratches from their fight for the pridelands. Emeral green eyes assessed the lioness's form momentarily, making sure his beloved was not terribly wounded; satisfied with the results of his once-over, the lion returned his gaze to the fading silhouettes in the horizon. His smirk widened momentarily, before he spoke once more.
"Pity your daughter sided with them so foolishly." He remarked, "Shame she only inherited your good looks and not your smarts." The lion purred in what was obviously not an insulting tone, but rather, the opposite. In the quiet of the moment, and being sure that the pride was making themselves at home within the cave, Scar allowed himself a moment of vulnerability, leaning in to flick his tongue over Sarafina's ear gently. The King would allow himself some peace and quiet for the rest of the day; tomorrow, the cogs in his mind would begin turning towards enforcing his regime over the Pridelands, but he and his pride, his children, his Queen, they all deserved to relish the moment.
A rumble of a purr arose from the depths of Sarafina's chest as her dark-maned lover padded up behind her to rest his form at her side. For him the lioness was all affection. Her posture oriented itself so that she could lean into him, eyelids drifting to a dreamy half-mast as his tongue rasped over her ear. A sigh could be heard; with the expulsion of air so too did Sarafina ease from herself the tension of the day's battle. Her husband and pride were safe, returned to the home that he had won for them through cunning so many years ago.
Leaning into him Sarafina allowed herself to sink half of her face into the raven waves that curled along his neck, one eye returning to the retreating figures. A hum answered Scar's observation of her daughter, the only response she voiced for a brief moment of reflection.
"Too much of the father in her," The lioness mused thoughtfully. "He didn't understand that morality and reality cannot always see eye to eye either." Another sigh, this one more discontented. "I would have preferred her to remember her duty to the pride before she went gallivanting off to seek new males. That aside... Were the caves clear?"
Scar's ear flicked in mild annoyance, an uncommited hum escaping him. Too much of the father in Nala alright. Surely, their future heirs would not have that problem. Scar valued his present children as pride members, but he couldn't risk traitor blood running his pride.Β
'Too much of the other prent' was a problem both of his children presented. Nuka, weak and frail like his mother, but without her wickedness and drive to succeed. Kula had Sarabi's soft gentleness but lacked the ability to lead. Neither child had enough Scar in him. But a child between himself and his beloved queen? There was no such thing as a cub having too much Sarafina or too much Scar in it. Scar would make sure his true heir was perfect.
All in due time, however.
"They are." He replied, "Simba's laughable excuse of a pride didn't linger." Scar would gladly have welcomed former pridelanders that seemed harmless and gave him their loyalty, but alas, they were all like their leader; brainless and hardheaded to a dangerous extent. Except for his own daughter, of course; she had, at least, proven to not be a complete disgrace. He didn't even have to question her loyalty.Β
"Their fate is no longer our concern." Scar added; he would personally be perfectly fine with Simba and his brood getting eaten by hyenas. "We have a golden age to focus on ahead of us either way." The lion added, chest puffed out in pride.
In the end, Mohatu's wish had been granted.
Sarafina's laugh was as a whisper of distant birdsong, gentle and melodic. Something her beloved had said seemed to have truly struck a chord with her, and what started as a hum graduated into a bubbling chuckle.
"A golden era, my love? Surely you must be mistaken. The golden kings three are dead or gone," Her creamy fur pressed against his red as she leaned into him, sinking against him again as a glint of wicked humor sparked in her eye. "Your era shall be as red as your kin, as red and royal as your bloodline alone could be."

W-Wow! I... I really LOVE this AU??? I love the personality you gave Sarafina, cunning and beautiful, yet not so maniac and obsessive with Scar in a way Zira was. And it was very interesting that she did not side with her own daughter, that despite the definite dangers that plagued the lands, she held faith in her beloved Scar that times would come to a good. And Scar does not seem so evil here, and rather focuses on the important establishments within his pride, the loyalty and healthy bloodline, and the stability.Β
And your writing is so lovely, I adore the way you describe some of the details, such as the environment and Sarafinaβs eyes, etc. The characters seem genuinely happy, or at least finally at an ease despite the horrors of the times they have experienced. I like that Scar is not totally evil here, and is merely doing what he thinks is best for his pride now. Amazing job! Such a lovely artwork and a beautiful story! Β

Yep! This was actually from a roleplay in which Simba and the cubs were spirited away against their will, but in short he and his heirs go missing and leave the Pridelands vulnerable again.

Hmm. "Mohatu's wish had been granted." That's rich, coming from the lion who let his ill-gotten kingdom go to shit
But seriously, very intriguing story and art!

This looks great, plus it's nice to see that this Scar actually cares about more than himself and that Sarafina has her own personality.

Thanks! I always had a soft spot for Sarafina -- but I didn't really like how she's always portrayed as a bit of a doormat.

Damn, Sarafina, that's cold. I do like how you've interpreted her here. Irma an interesting change from how she's usually portrayed.
And your art is amazing as per usual

If you happen to be interested in more of this storyline at all, feel free to check out the roleplay site! It's open to fancharacters of all kinds and there are still lots of canon characters still available (the only taken TLK lions for instance are Kula, Scar, Sarafina, Kiara, and Kion)!

Is the roleplay still ongoing? =o

The roleplay that this particular piece is attached to had to be discontinued due to not having enough staff for the complicated premise, but a simplified version of the roleplay has been remade here:
disneyconquest.boards.net/
There are still plenty of canon characters available as well as opportunities for fan-characters! We're also looking for players for Zira and Kovu in particular if you're of the mind to play canon TLK characters.

I might consider joining but I'm kinda swamped with work for university at the moment. I'll definitely check out the site though especially if there's TLK characters up for grab.

Well it is nice to see Sarafina get more of a part. Her personality is different but it's actually a welcomed difference since we never knew much about her to begin with.Β

kaikree In reply to Claire-Cooper [2017-03-01 22:06:38 +0000 UTC]
I wanted to expand her from the role she usually gets as just Sarabi's best friend or Scar's demure childhood crush -- glad it's going over well with so many!!
(If you're interested in seeing more feel free to check out the rp site!)

Claire-Cooper In reply to kaikree [2017-03-01 22:14:48 +0000 UTC]
Well she is definitely more interested in this story then I've seen in any other and that's kinda saying a lot given your right it's normally just her being a timid crush of Scar or Sarabi's friend.
There is the odd twist where Sarabi and her aren't really friends (At first)
Then there's ones where she crushes on Mufasa (Rarely)
And if your referencing to DWW I've kinda avoided that site. I've grown a bit of a dislike for a certain admin who thought I was "Too Nice" for a reason other then just wanting to be polite.Β
But I do want to learn more so I might some time check it out unless it's a different rp site.Β

Actually no, this isn't DWoW. I'll be honest I have no idea what's been going on over there since I quit. Nasira, Clopin and I decided that we wanted somewhere a bit more free with the creativity, so we went ahead and made our own with a different premise;
a-whole-new-world.boards.net/
It isn't war-based but is reliant a bit on random generators, at least when it comes to what characters end up in which worlds. Every character who is made into a 'Key' is given a mission that they have to discover as well as solve if they have any hope of returning to their homeworld. There's more to it than that, but that's the most basic way to summarize it without directing you to the plot page itself.
