Smudge a little bit more on top of your render so it blends in. Try to get more definition on your smudge so you can see the lines a little better.

Smudging is a little hard to give tips for.
Try to have a general flow of where your smudge will be going so it isn't all over the place. Apply the image so you can better blend colors together or fix certain spots that need to be re-done.
Try not adding too much lighting if you're using bright colors or you'll get spots that are too bright or sharp. Use clipping masks to blend in your render or smudge over it or smudge little parts of the render to help it blend.
