Description
Well it's been a while since I did an A4 portrait, as I've been doing smaller images recently. I've been meaning to go back and do some more Lord of the Rings portraits after watching the films again recently (Best. Trilogy. Ever.).I have improved a bit since my Aragorn picture ([link] ), but have been struggling with getting my contrast right and have not been going dark enough on skintones, so found a great picture of Legolas, which had some nice contrast to use and practice on. All the Works in Progress are in my Scrapbook here: [link]
Capturing the fey magical beauty of elves on the big screen is an impossibly hard job, but they managed it pretty well in the films apart from the odd dodgy camp elf here and there
I was pleased to find this ref, where Orlando doesn't look like he's about to go running off to pick flowers or hug a tree right after the shot...
So Orlando Bloom as Legolas on A4 Bristol Smooth paper using 2H-8B pencils and 8B Mars Lumograph for the background. Not sure how long, but around 20hrs or so.. (That poor lumo took a bit of a hammering
Reference comparison pic:
How it starts WiP's (Had somebody ask on FB

Really pleased with the outcome; probably my best drawing yet, so I'll try and get my tonal values better in future!
I might have to come back and do something about the hair near the braid...that area looks a mess
Comment or critique away! - Kal
**Photo update to answer questions on background and stuff, showing the reflections at the risk of disappointment

Thanks so much! Yeh, I did a few measurements for Aragorn, but started using a grid just after
It made a big difference
I'm also a bit happier with my techniques, so this turned out really well!
I'm so glad people like it, but now have to try and maintain this quality and improve further...there's such a long way to go
Thankyou for the comment and fav!
I'm a big fan of your work!

The grid is a pain, but it's worth it.
I'm sure you will!

OHOHOH! How the hell could I miss this masterpiece?!
I love the details and contrast! I think you even catchen the border of his contact lenses
First I thought his eyes are a little ... odd... but in the ref they are just like this
Did you blend your Lumo? I made the experience that gets REALLY glossy if you blend it with a tissue.

I had a try, but it went horrible and left bits of tissue everywhere...so I covered it with normal graphite so the whole thing looked shiny Thanks for the lovely comment!!
Glad so many people like it

Daaaaaamn this is absolutely beautiful. <3
It's been a long while since I've seen any good LOTR fanart, especially of good old Leggy - I used to be such an utter fangirl! I probably should draw him myself some time, properly...
Anyway - supurb detail and use of negative space on the top part of his head. His hair looks amazing!

I love the Borderlands Cosplay heh
I'm currently playing that a wee bit with my two brothers, one up in Aberdeen and one in the USA....(when his wife lets him
)...ah the power of the interwebz!
I need a bit more time to scroll through some of the stuff first though!
I'm glad you liked my pic

This is amazing. Like, incredible. The realism you have accomplished blows my mind, especially since I have been trying for some eons now to make realistic drawings of folks and have failed miserably every time. You should be proud of yourself for pulling this off.
And I will add that he doesn't look at all like he's going to pick flowers.

In the XVII century the great german astronomer Johannes Kepler believed that the planets
had their own life and they were following consciously
the laws of motion captured by his mind.
I sincerely believe that this picture is so real that has its own life,
because I'm sure
that has followed me with his eyes!!!
P.S.: This is the best drawing of Legolas I've seen so far !!!

Wow, that's some crazy praise right there! Because of this praise, my head got so big, it developed it's own gravity well and broke through the layer of reality in this universe becoming a singularity! It's now slowly devouring the planet, starting with the UK
Thanks so much!!

Wooooaaaaaaa!!!!! You've achieved what it has been unable the CERN, with the L.H.C. (Large Hadron Collinder). Creating your own singularity, where all the laws of physics cease to be valid.
Congratulations, from here, we begin to notice the gravity of your big head!!!

Lol I think my head can be seen from space
Being a bit of a nerd I would have known just LHC
Can't wait for that to fully open and develop! Exciting to think they might find the Higgs-Boson
I'm not convinced it's going to be as simple as that however, as each technological breakthrough asks more questions that it solves! I can't wait for the James-Webb telescope to be launched! Hubble was amazing, but the pictures and breakthrough's could be even more spectacular!
Bah...if I had my time again, I'd pay attention in maths at school and study Cosmology or physics Easily the most interesting subjects, but I got subverted by Biology hehe

Will be spectacular all the information that will give us this telescope when it's launches in 2018
. But the information we will collect will be related to the early universe, 14.500 million years ago
. In contrast the LHC, if they find the God particle famous, we get the solution of the origin of mass. If this fails, we can choose by the string theory!
Anyway all the knowledge that we obtain with these devices will open to us new doors.
Efforts to understand the universe, are one of the few things that raise the level of human life a little above the farce, and gives it some of the grace of tragedy.

You are very right Jon!!
It's a shame that now, due to the global crisis, there's no more money destined for this type of research and its dissemination to the public.
There are still many unanswered questions!
We are glad to find someone who is interested also in these issues.
