Description

FINALLY able to submit this now that I've given them the original xD

This is a gift for my cousins for Christmas (yes, this is that old), but I wasn't able to give it to them for Christmas, so I finally gave it to them today x3 This is a portrait of their daughter Kinley. I found this picture on their Facebook, and I had gotten an art assignment where I had to make a picture of a person, where half is a photo, and half is drawn. The top half I drew, and the bottom is the photo. It's also going in my portfolio in breadth c:

This photo I used for a ref was taken at a time where she was having a lot of problems responding to anything, so that's why she has a kinda "blank stare". She had many problems in the first few years of life, struggling to even stay alive. She's allergic to many different things, and has to be put on a strict diet, and even developed autism (the "genius" kind though, I forgot what it's called). She is doing much better now though, responsive to many more things, she loves music and singing (her dad sings to her), and although she is about a year behind where she should be, and has yet to learn to talk, she's doing great At the Easter dinner, she was running all around, my grandma compared her to a bird, where she's here one second, and another place the next.

And as I apparently haven't commented on this piece before, I want to say you did a nice job with the shading and getting across the girl's emotion (or lack of).

I have a question about submitting graphite drawings to AP, if you don't mind. When you send the 5 actual pictures, is there a high chance of anything smearing, or is it a minor concern? I'm just wondering because I'm thinking of doing a few graphite pieces but I don't want anything to smear and mess up details or whatnot.

Oh and also, for breadth, is the point to use many different mediums as well as draw a variety of things (for example, don't just draw animals) or what?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm planning on taking AP studio art this year but my school doesn't offer it, so I'm taking it independently. I've read the syllabus and course description on Collgeboard but as I won't have an actual AP art teacher to talk to about the course, I figured I'd ask someone who's taken the course instead

Umm, I'm not really sure, I didn't send any graphite pieces, but I would say if you seal it with a spray, it shouldn't have any problems. You're also going to have to frame the pieces (not with literal frames, but like thicker boards, or at least our art teacher made us, I'm not sure if it's required or not, but recommended at least.

And yeah, for breadth, the best thing to do is stretch your limits, do as many different things as possible since it pretty much means variety, remember you want to show the collegeboard what you are capable of. It's ok to use the same medium, but they want to see other things used as well to see what you can do. Our art teacher gave us themes to go by, but left it up to us for interpretation sometimes, I can help you with it if you want c: For the concetration, that's when you show them that not only can you do many things, but you can concentrate as well. You can use other mediums in that too, but it should still go by one theme, they also want it to have meaning since you're going to have to write a short description of why you chose it, what your first ideas were, why you ended up choosing that, etc. It's really not very long though.

And it's ok, I had a lot of questions and uncertainties going in too, so if you have any more questions don't be scared to ask, it must be really hard without an art teacher because she guided us through it almost the whole way, except for concentration where she let us loose to do whatever we wanted. We also graded each others art and did critiques for each piece, there's nothing like actually sitting in the class and doing that xD

Ok, thank you so much! I will have to buy some fixative then, I don't want anything to get messed up after mailing

If you could help me a bit when school gets closer, I would really appreciate it Course, I dunno yet what I need help with, but I'm sure i'll have more questions, if you don't mind answering them

And yes, I'm thinking about asking the regular art teacher at the school (which will be a new school for me, since I'm moving :/) if she/he has any past experience with AP, and even if she/he doesn't I may be able to schedule some time to ask her to critique some of my work and guide me a bit.

Thank you so much for answering my questions ^_^ I'm kinda nervous about doing this on my own, as I really don't want to mess up somehow o_O

No problem :3 And yeah, better safe then sorry I guess xD

Alright c:

That'd be cool too, hope they now something, because it's easier talking to people in person because they can give demonstrations lol xD

And any time, I can see how someone would be nervous about taking any AP class themselves o-O; They can be hard, at least AP Art is fun though if you like art cx
Believe it or not it was actually my stress reliever class last year xDD

Lovely contrast between the photo and drawing. But I'm gonna be really generous today and say that I don't see any difference between the two.
'Cuz it's true.

Whoa Sarah!!!

this is amazing!! I have to say, this is the best drawing you've ever done, or at least, in the top 5!!!!

Amazing!!!

Do you maybe have any tips on capturing likeness? I have a friend who would like a portrait of one of her characters from her head, and I'm just sorta using her descriptions. I am struggling!!
Sorry for the random plea there..

Thank you so much <33

I think the tortoise is the best so far actually xD

Umm... it takes a lot of practice and continual trial and error to actually get the likeness of them, you can also do little studies (don't even have to draw them, just really LOOK at things like you haven't before, try noticing little things you never have before. It ALWAYS helps using a reference too Hope that helps... at all xD;
