Description EDIT: This is still getting s but it would be nice to know of anyone actually using this! - gimmie a link if you make an animation using this as reference will ya? I'm interested to see ...also, it'd be great if you linked back to this tutorial so that other people can benefit from it too! ^-^
-----------------------------------
my good friend Cerzz has started to dabble in the wonderful and pain-staking world of animation! So far she's been lookin' mostly at dogs, so I quickly knocked up some thumbnails and threw together this tutorial to try and explain a few things. It only took an hour to put together, so it's not meant to be any conclusive lesson in making the perfect run cycle, more that it's simply intended to illustrate a few things which aren't easy to explain in words. I figured I'd post it up here in case anyone else finds it useful!

I suggest using this only as a guide, as you can see the animation itself is basic and by no means flawless!! the animation should loop automatically (if not, right click, loop) and if it's too small to read any of the text, right click, zoom in.
my tutors would screw if they knew I was workin' on this instead of my school work lol! ... me go bed now

Hope it helps Cerrz

you're very welcome!! thanks for the and the nice comment! .. Flash is a pretty cool program cos you can use it quite similar to traiditional animation, with layer and stuff.. but in a lot of ways it saves huge amount of time!! ... of course NOTHING will ever compare to traditional art (even animation!) but flash is deffinately a handy tool :]

I might try to use flash now, you've got me all inspired!
I have used it before, last year at school in my computer studies class... It was fun, but time consuming! I might give it another shot!
And yes, yay for traditional art

yep! people sometimes don't think about secondary motion like the head and the tail but it's just as important as getting the legs to look right! \:]

nooooo problem - glad you found it useful at least it's far from a perfect of conclusive tutorial I'm affraid, but it should just about get accross the basics - have fun!

RitsukoAkagi In reply to KatCardy [2004-11-23 00:10:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it's far from perfect at all! It really helped me visualize how a dog runs. i must have stared at it for an hour or so. I recently have been getting into wolves. So when I wanted to draw one running, your tutorial really helped! Thanks again!

Omigosh thank yew! i'm so glad you posted a tutorial up here, I need one badly for when I get flash MX later this year. Chu rule Kat!

Oh, while I'm here, I've got the CD that has my flash movie on it. I did try and send it to you but hotmail was being an ass and would'nt let me send it because it's a large file poo. I'll try and make it DA-compatible...if I can :3

Cool! This is a great idea. I haven't ever tried quadrapeds in animation, but I'm looking forward to doing it this year in classical and computer. Plus I need to learn how to use flash x_x

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to datoria [2004-10-14 09:07:26 +0000 UTC]

quadropeds can be pretty tough to get the hang of!! x.X - that extra set of legs just serves to confuse issues... and I nearly always get a problem with body shrinkage! lol .. - they're great fun once you get the hang of them tho. \:] - weee!! will you be uploading the animations hear once they're done? ^_^

datoria In reply to KatCardy [2004-10-14 16:50:01 +0000 UTC]

I took a sneaky look at this on your pc yesterday and loved it! It works so much better than the Pogo 4legged. (Just realised I'm yet to do a 4 legged run!) Can't wait to see your Flash 'Fish Pie' ness

KatCardy In reply to ryanneal [2004-10-13 11:08:25 +0000 UTC]

yeah... me thinks Ima give up on pogo >.> lol! I should probably tidy this up and finish this so I can stick it on my showreel or summit. - fish pie will be forth coming, but first, cellary and parsnip soup. lifedrawing this afternoon! ^_^ weeeeee!

I think you can download a free trial of flash. That's what I've been using. It's running out, tho.

KatCardy In reply to Loar5 [2004-10-12 16:09:45 +0000 UTC]

Thumbs up! This is most nice tutorial. Must be hard to figure out the movement with 2 extra legs.
Btw, does macromedia flash have the ability to convert video files (avis mostly) to flash-format?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatCardy In reply to Thrakoleon [2004-10-12 16:09:03 +0000 UTC]

errrm.... kinda... I think you can import avis into it... - but the file size would be huge unless you did some compression magic on it.. - what kinda thing were you thinking of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thrakoleon In reply to KatCardy [2004-10-13 18:18:14 +0000 UTC]

Not pretty sure about it... had an inspiration of the moment about a fanart ani. Thanx anyways

KatCardy In reply to willarfunk [2004-10-11 00:02:21 +0000 UTC]

thanks! I quickly stuck this together on macromedia flash. [link] - but it's possible to use other animation programs such as animation shop from Jasc. [link]
