Best dragon design ever also you're a real inspiration to me with you're dragon pictures and they did help me see how a six legged dragon should look like so much so that the dragons in my fantasy novel which has dragons as a major plot point are based off of you're dragon pictures so yeah awesome

A thumbs up from this dragon would be... very interesting. xD And highly motivating. Especially if running is involved.

This is beautiful & amazing... However there is something bugging me about it... Why does he have raised toe claws on his right feet & not his left...? If they're those velociraptor-type claws then they should always be up... *confused*

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to ArcaneDespondency [2012-09-16 02:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

They're not anatomically exact velociraptor claws. The "thumb" on the dragons hind foot is double jointed, as are the thumbs on the hands. They can rotate 90 degrees from a normal human/raptor like position to the hind placement of an eagles foot and vise versa. This way they can grab prey from above while flying, as well as use the claw for all the typical theropod functions while on the ground.

His character design and story is based around the legend of y ddraig goch and y ddraig gwyn, so it's cool that actually was able to show through. Thanks!

Excellently realistic, but the nose throws me off. xD

I know dragons share traits of many animals, but I view them as strictly reptilian in their facial features at least.

Thanks, the nose is actually bugging me a tad, though for different reasons, I may change it to a more beak like structure later. I'm always changing the design of this guy.

I just love the inclusion of mammalian features in your dragon designs despite never disowning a reptilian layout.. it is just really consistent with the dragon artistic tradition during many centuries in Europe I suppose that from a biological point of view these features may have evolved by convergent evolution from reptilian ancestors

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to JackRover [2012-09-15 19:41:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't actually think dragons could be true reptiles or true mammals, due to the addition of another pair of arms. Which is partly why I like giving them traits from both groups. Thank you!

I greatly admire how she paints her dragons and other critters. That image partly inspired this one, well at least the dragon on a rock part. But I don't really see the similarity between the dragons, unless you're referring specifically to the setting.

telthona In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2012-09-15 23:55:47 +0000 UTC]

oh come on, even the rock shape is simmilar xD The design is different but proportions and pose is almost the same

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to telthona [2012-09-16 00:44:37 +0000 UTC]

I really don't see it, I liked how the rock was painted and was trying for that same kind of feeling, but it's not the same structure. As for the proportions, this is how I've always drawn dragons, and I'm a little offended that you're insisting I copied her, as I've put a lot of time and drawings into figuring these critters out. As for the pose, that's based on a drawing of this same dragon from a few years ago, and it looks nothing like what Austin has drawn. I really don't know what you want from me at this point.

telthona In reply to KatePfeilschiefter [2012-09-16 11:47:48 +0000 UTC]

i dont want from you anything just try to avoid such obvious things like using artwork as an inspiration and reference in some point in the future. You have your own skill, you can figure out something more yours. I just don't like when artists try to achive similar impression as their masters. Its just boring. You can see this on Kekai Kotaki fans galleries, you can see this on Loish fans galleries.. so you can probably see what i mean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to telthona [2012-09-16 19:04:40 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean, but I don't consider this painting as falling into that category. As for example, I could find hundreds of images extremely similar to what Austin painted, that doesn't mean her or my painting is any less valid. Striving to meet the same quality of work as the artist you admire is a big part of getting better and growing skill, and if that makes an image or an artist boring, then all art is boring. Nothing is created in a vacuum. Aside from that, I've drawn dragons on rocks before, painting one of those drawings doesn't mean I'm purposely trying to replicate something someone else made. This image was more inspired by Todd Lockwood than Austin anyway. The fact that you see more Austin in it than Todd is coincidental.
