Description Be careful when downloading, because this is...gigantic.
Finished my promised tutorial on how to make 3-dimensional animal ears. The craft foam and tinfoil ones are okay but I wanted something a little more realistic.
Important note: The base ears should look a little too small--once you add the fur, they will appear much larger. So be careful to avoid making ears exactly the size you want the first time around.
Feel free to comment or note/message me if you have any questions! Oh, and if you use this tutorial, please message me a link to a picture! I love seeing pictures. :3
Oh, and I totally take commissions on these little suckers, so if you run into a lot of trouble or just get lazy I'd be happy to whip some up for you. :3

Question: What kind of clips do you use? I've been looking all over for the kind used in this tutorial but no luck. Where did you find them? All I can think of to use are some metal barrettes from the craft store, but I don't think they'd look or work near as good as those black plastic clips you've got there. Do they have a specific name?

I don't know if they have a name, really, but they're made by Scunci and I got a pack of six for like $3 at CVS. Just check your local drug store chain, like CVS, Rite-Aid, or Walmart, and they'll probably be there.

A few questions on what I should use:

- I don't really wanna go and buy a hot glue gun, but we do have Gorilla glue (and Elmer's glue, but for some reason something tells me that might not be enough), so would that be a fine substitute, or should I use something else?

- What kind of glue would be good for bonding the ears to a headband instead of a clip (and would I have to do anything extra to make gluing to a headband easier)?

- What kind of paint should I use? (Sorry if this is a dumb question; I've never done this before but I wanna make these for a friend)

Katsumiyo In reply to ShayminFTW [2013-01-21 08:51:12 +0000 UTC]

I've never used Elmer's on synthetic fur, but I don't really know how well it would hold. The reason hot glue works so well is that the glue is so thick and meshes so well into the fabric backing of the fur and the pores on the craft foam. Honestly, I would just buy a hot glue gun--they're quite cheap and overall, a more than solid investment if you make costumes. You could also use it to attach the ears to the headband. As for the paint, any old acrylic paint will do just fine.

I'd like to know if gorilla glue will at least work, though--I don't plan on making things like this very often, and I don't wanna spend money on a hot glue gun if I have a decent alternative. Thanks so much for the help!!

Sorry, but I just don't know if gorilla glue will help. I haven't any lying around, so I couldn't do a test for you. Hopefully, it'll work out! You can always do a test on a little scrap.

Good job! As you probably noticed, it doesn't take more than about a sheet of paper's worth for each material.

Crisis-Projection In reply to ??? [2012-10-31 19:01:46 +0000 UTC]

Hello hello! First of all I'd like to thank you for putting this tutorial up; I'm doing a human amaterasu cosplay and this will come in super handy. : 3

I did have a few quick questions regarding the materials used for construction, though. Is hot glue completely required or do you think I can get away with something a little less..I don't know, messy, like Gorilla Glue? Secondly, I noticed you said to paint the bases of the ears and the fur, but what if the wig and ears are white? I suppose then that I could forego that step, yes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to Crisis-Projection [2012-11-05 04:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Of course! As long as you take it easy and don't have an itchy trigger finger, hot glue isn't too messy when it comes to making ears. I imagine fabric glue like Fabri-Tac might work, but I used hot glue because it bonds so well with the mesh-like backing of the fur and the porous surface of the craft foam. And by painting the craft foam, I made it match the color of the fur. If you use white craft foam from the start, I assume you wouldn't need to paint it to match. :3 Looking forward to seeing pictures of the finished costume!

Just a quick question, but is the outside of the ear the same length as the base?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to iMunchyMoo [2012-07-23 19:01:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm not quite sure of what you're asking, but hopefully this answers your question: They're both essentially triangle shapes, and the length of the inside line on the front triangle is equivalent to the inside line of the back piece. The lines for the outside of the ear correspond as well. There'd really be no purpose to making the side of one triangle longer than the other; then it would just sit unevenly on the wig.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iMunchyMoo In reply to Katsumiyo [2012-07-24 02:42:11 +0000 UTC]

I guess I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the inside and the outside, then. ]: Because in the first step you say to make the inside line shorter than the outside, but I'm not sure what that means. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I'm really unsure of what you mean by the inside/outside lines.

Sorry if I misunderstood. D;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to iMunchyMoo [2012-07-24 04:39:10 +0000 UTC]

If the line for the inside of the ear is 2", the line for the outside of the ear should be 2.25" or so. That will put the ears at a nicer angle on your head. Then, the measurements for the inside lines on the front (triangular) and back (conical) should match up.

iMunchyMoo In reply to Katsumiyo [2012-07-27 00:55:19 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for my late answer~
What about the length of the third side of the front piece? The side that attaches to the hairclip.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to iMunchyMoo [2012-07-27 05:10:08 +0000 UTC]

Usually, that's about the same length as the inside edge for me. But the cone piece needs to have a considerably longer side on that part, to create the cone shape. The bottom of the ear is hollow. :3

Katsumiyo In reply to MiyuHimekawa [2012-07-09 07:02:11 +0000 UTC]

I just buy my fur at local fabric stores. They usually keep it in the back of the fabric area, near the fleece or costume fabrics.
