Katsumiyo — How to Cut Simple Bangs

Description Another cosplay tutorial! I see a lot of people buying wigs and then just wearing them straight out of the bag with no styling. Wigs were meant to be styled--and it's fun to do, too! Even cosplays of characters like Hatsune Miku, who have that chunk of hair in the middle, should have a little trimming done. Seems like a lot of people are afraid to take scissors to a wig, so I'm here to help with that. :3 These are just some very basic and simple anime bangs that many characters have. If you're going to be cosplaying, especially female characters, trimming bangs is something you're going to have to practice and grow skilled with.
The photos for this one have been sitting in a random folder for months and I just today remembered that I intended to make it! How did I forget all summer? Failboat. But it's done now, just in time for me to find another way to procrastinate on studying...
Hope it can help someone out!

This was really helpful! I used it for my Zelda skyward sword version cosplay. I've never cut bangs before, but it worked out great, following your tips! Thanks a lot!

Hey Strange question But is there anyway you can use the hair cut from the wig? X_X ( I have a really long wig - past my waist - and i wanna cut it for another cosplay But it feels like throwing away half the wig will be a waste)

There is actually a way to make wefts from cut hair! I warn you, it's very messy and time-consuming, but it can be done. Here's the tutorial: www.cosplay.com/photo/1079221/

Hi! I just got a wig from Five wits, and I was planning on cutting some bangs into it. However, I was a bit confused when you talked about using your bottom lid as a reference point. The wig you cut seemed to end up just about at your eyebrows in the length. How would you determine where the bottom of the bangs would end up? Thanks.

Katsumiyo In reply to CompassRoses [2014-06-08 16:33:11 +0000 UTC]

As I said in the tutorial, I began with my lower eyelid as a point of reference, but my final point was my eyebrows. If you try to cut bangs that long to your final point right away, the weight can mess with the balance of the fibers over the blades of the scissors and you'll end up with choppy and uneven bangs. As for the length of the bangs, just go by the character. Most have bangs to their eyebrows, but some will have bangs above their eyebrows or halfway up their foreheads.
Hope that helps!

Oh, I understand now, thank you very much for the help! It's my first real wig so Imm a bit nervous, but I think I can get this right.

How would you fix the wigs bangs?

I'm sorry, but I suppose I don't understand the question. What is the problem I would be fixing?

I have a wig that I cut straight across before I saw this post and I was wondering if there was a way for me to fix it because the wigs is crooked?

Katsumiyo In reply to BrokenWiltedRose [2014-05-13 16:45:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, wig hair can't get longer. So if the bangs are too short already, you don't really have options in the way of fixing it. If you just want to even them up, use very small vertical snips to slowly shorten the longer side. Touch up the ends with a razor comb or thinning shears once you're done if you're a novice.

I'm happy to help! I don't think I've ever worn that particular wig to a convention before, but there are plenty of Horo cosplayers, so you may be thinking of someone else.

It helps to tilt your head the tiniest bit while you trim, so the hair goes straight into the sink. It also helps to brush off hair as you go, so it doesn't pile up. I've gotten stuck a couple times, but it's not really *that* bad.

Fantastic, thank you!  I noticed from the comments that you prefer Arda Wigs.  Is that where you got this particular one?  What color?  Is it bad that I got a $6 wig from Joann's for a small costume/cosplay?  (Sorry about all the questions, I'm new at this )

This particular wig I got from an eBay store. So few sellers have this perfect tea-brown shade that I needed for Horo. I personally don't use Halloween/party store wigs, but I've seen other people work with them before. I just prefer wigs from sites like Arda and Epic Cosplay because they tend to be fuller and easier to work with.

anyone know how to style hatsune miku bangs

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Katsumiyo In reply to MooMooDCow [2013-10-18 04:51:36 +0000 UTC]

Cutting the bangs is basically the same on every wig. Just cut them to the desired length, then use hair spray to style them the way you want.
