Ah. I personally hate the dodge and burn for shading, and never considered their useful points for this... Very easy to follow! Thank you!

First- link me if you already answered these questions... Here I go!
Your tutorial is really fun and useful to try out as a newbie like me.
I was in the middle of trying this in my-
Abode Photoshop [CS3] 10.0 (2)
In addition, I tried the Burn tool as stated in the tut and I did it as you said to do the setting and it lighten it instead of darkened it even though I set it to shadow. I thought it might have something to do with the color so I adjusted that and in trial&error I pressed the right mouse button and nothing happen. Do you think you might know an idea of what I did wrong?
I played around with it for a bit and tried the rays. I was reading on how to get started but there was not anything telling me about the color I had to use or what setting to put the brush on. I played with it for an hour or two and I just got a strong impression I am not doing this right until I skipped ahead and did a ray and that concluded I was doing something wrong.
Could you help me with that plz?

it sounds like you might have set the dodge tool on instead of burn. in photoshop the burn and dodge tool are under the same button, but you have to click the little arrow in the bottom right corner of the tool button to toggle it. i only have CS, so i don't know if there are add ons with CS3.
for the rays, it doesn't matter what colour you set it to because you are still using the dodge tool for those.

You know what's cool. I looked at this tutorial before and used as much of the technique as I could on an acrylic painting I did! ^__^ it works great for painting I guess. And as soon as I get it uploaded on here, I shall mention it to you.

What setting should I have the doge and burn on... You know the setting you had those brushes in your photoshop, like Size-Hardness-Step-density-thickness and opacity blend mode and all the like for those two brushes. Cause if I am going to do this I would prefer to do it right.
I can not use photoshop but my PSP9 has all the tools that match the descriptions in this tutorial.
