Description Keith More hyperrealistic pencil drawing. A3 size. Inspired by a photograph by Shannon Haughton Gill.
I've blended the left side of the face going into black since posting this version. I'll post the new version when I get a chance.

Thanks Eddie, that's an incredibly kind and humbling thing for you to say.  I'd be happy post you a list of the tools I use and my working methods if you'd find it useful.

Keith, that would be fantastic and very helpful indeed if you did that!

Here you go Eddie. I hope this is of help to you.

Pencils: Faber Castell 9000 series B, 2B,4B,8B. I have three of each of these pencils, sharp, medium and blunt. Practice using various pressures to achieve different values. I use a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B (for black backgrounds). Tombow mono mini eraser, scalpel (to cut Tombow to a sharp edge) Putty eraser or Blu Tack, Small & medium tortillions and blending stumps, Donegan OptiVISOR jewellers magnifiers, Bristol board 250gm.

I use the grid method and when I'm working on a drawing I'm pretty much doing it grid by grid. My reference is on a computer screen and whichever grid square I'm working on is zoomed into on the screen. That way, the values that surround it don't distract me and I can really concentrate on every detail within that grid square. I spend quite a while studying the grid square I'm about to draw before working on it. This get's my eyes tuned into the values and composition within that section.

Do a Google search for Edward H. Adelson.  There's a chess board illustration he's done that demonstrates how a value will appear to change depending on what is next to it. Square A and B are the same value in this illustration.

All the best.

Thanks Keith! Ive tried three times to reply but having trouble getting it to load here, anyway, thanks again for taking the time to list your tools and method, most interesting indeed and I will certainly give it a go soon. Ive never drawn from my screen and it makes perfect sense when you think of it, printing loses so much detail, does your grid remain accurate when magnifying, my photoshop grid Ive noticed shifts when blowing up the image. I like the Lumograph 8b but find it a bit heavy going for blending, so use carbon pencils, the downside though is fixitive turns all those blacks to grey, do you use fixitive on your work Keith, general advice is its a must but Im finding so many good artists  against it, and I really dislike the effects it has on my drawing. Whats your opinion on it?
cheers Eddie.

Hi Eddie. I use a free programme called gimp to create my grids. There's a slight loss of quality to the image when using gimp, so I also have the original version on screen at the same time just to double check. You're right, the Lumograph is pants for blending so I ease off the pressure and do lots of soft circles and scribbles at the blend point and then blend really softly….it takes ages though. I never use fixative, nor does Dirk Dizmirsky (although he does use fixative for his charcoal work). It completely ruins the fine detail to my eyes. As soon as I've finished a piece I take a hi res photograph (which I then take a screen shot of for publication proposes) and then I get it framed with UV protection glass. I then store it in a dark dry cupboard away from any light…..just for my paranoia!!!! I'm not entirely happy with even the highest resolution cameras yet. I've tried the new Nikon D810 with my new old stock Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AI lens (the sharpest ever Nikkor lens) and the quality is nearly there but not quite. The next generation of Nikon should be spot on I think. When I've captured my drawings to a standard which I feel is perfect, then I'll sell them!
Cheers,

Keith.

thanks again Keith for taking the time. Ive used your advice already on a drawing Im working on and blew up [300%] a section to study and found it very helpful in rendering the section, will def' be trying out your method soon. Yeah, the feeling I'm having with fixitive is to give it a miss, my Jon Snow drawing was all but ruined with the stuff, all my great blacks turned grey and those  little details I spent so long on became ..mush..lol, There is so much conflicting advice out there, what I have been doing is a very light spray or two to give it...something...then going back into the work reaffirming all my blacks and darks, a real pain, not all my drawings are worth framing unfortunately and the shop I take them to is a little expensive [but great service] so its a balance act, perhaps I need to hone my skills framing too, lol. I might go for a camera one day for my finished drawings but for now a scanner will do. Its a thought to have to start at the begining of that learning journey. Thanks for ll your advice Keith, it shall be put to good use, and keep producing those wonderful pieces that just blow me away!
cheers Eddie.

Depth and precision. I'm in awe of this. It's the skin texture I'm most impressed by - you must have so much patience. Excellent work!

Insane how realistic it looks. Just makes me realize how crappy I am as an artist when I see incredible stuff like this (and how much its possible to improve) The pores in the skin are incredible and the detail... wows extremely well done, hopefully one day I can be this good at drawing realism
