Most male turkeys are killed because they go crazy during mating season, which is usually also hunting season. The rest of the year they hide in the forest and you can’t get close. During mating season hunters use fake plastic turkeys (decoys) to attract male turkeys. Surprisingly they are more attracted to male decoys than females. Not for mating, but fighting. The best male decoys are immature males, called jakes. This is because the mature males mostly want to fight smaller birds they think they can beat up.
