The reaction to this particular photo and for instance "Amy 22 " was that it's a very unflattering focal length that you used.
Wide-angle only distorts and makes things look a little wonky. If that's the look you were aiming for, then great, eyes and face look bigger than rest of her body.

For portraits, I would personally just zoom out the lens into its longest position and just keep it there. It will make for a much aesthetically pleasing composition.

Her red hair is great, drawing much attention, contrasts very well with the greens and the greys.
I was trying to find some backlit photos in this collection, but didn't find any. One way to enhance the color of hair even more is to have the sun behind the model. Then she would look fierce! I used it on this silly photo for great effect.

Thanks for your comments. I am an art photographer, not a portrait photographer, so yes, I experiment with focal length, lighting and color. I'm also barely into editing the shots I did of this model---I like to post as I go to get a sense of responses to the photos, and to see a series collected in one place that's not just my own computer. I choseΒ  a small lens for the initial shots of this model for a number of reasons; one of which was that she was an inexperience model who trusted me because of our friendship, and I wanted to start the session physically close to her, to reassure her of her posing and expressions. Later in the session (haven't gotten there yet) I used my 55-200. I'm sure you'll find some of those shots more portrait-like.

I do use a lot of back lighting. If you look through my galleries you'll see many examples. I'm sure I used some with her, and will post the shots eventually.
