This has always been a serious fear for me...I think my biggest library fine to date was $24.50. (I kept eight books two weeks longer than I should have, or something like that.)
My excuse? I'm just funding the purchase of their next Encyclopedia Britannica!

This is why most sensible libraries give an amnesty on fines after 10 years, or cap fines at around $10. If they did what this moronic library did, they'd never get their lost books back.

I owed $60 for a book I borrowed in 2nd grade. can't find the book but i checked my due fees (in 10th grade) and there it was $60.

They seriously charged you that and never sent a letter to you. How ridiculous!! I find that so cold and stupid. I, mean, my library always sends me a notice if I have a late book. It should be mandatory for them to inform you if you have a book for so long.

I think at my library, if you return them they don't charge you the overdue fees--it's only if you don't return them that you have to watch out.

I recall something like this happening to someone I don't know long ago: about four years ago, my younger sister, who was as obnoxious as all hell back then, wanted to rent the movie "Holes" from the public library. Unfortunately for her, someone had already checked it out a few days prior. Disappointed, she took her frustration out on us; the only reason why she stopped bitching was because we told her it would be back in soon, at the lastest in little less than two weeks. A year passed, and it still hadn't been turned in. The late fee for overdue movies was apparently a dollar per day. As it later turned out, the movie was turned in a week after that, but not before the person who rented it had to be forcibly removed from the library by two officers after flying into a rage when he/she learned of the exorbitant late fee; what happened next, I have no idea, but I think of if as one of the more interesting, though otherwise more insignificant moments of my lfe.

Thats why I like my library. So long as you return the books, you don't pay till you get something again and they see it on the card. SO just dont ever go back.

Here in Hungary you have days assigned when you can return any book free of charge... they are really nice.

XD I find this one especially hilarious since I worked at libraries for about six years. They eventually realized that, because of situations exactly like this, a lot of people were just keeping their overdue books forever, so they decided that no matter how long you had the books out, as long as you returned them *at all* the fines would max out at $5 per book. Of course, this was just in my county... I'm not sure if they all do that.
