"One down" means one life down. She probably had drown and now she is counting her number of lives left which is eight.

The marking of the cat on her arm is an allusion to a life already past. The title, "One down" is referencing this.

I can't decide whether or not I like this. I feel I should because the model's beautiful, the pose is great, the colours are gorgeous... but the tension between the model and the left hand edge of the image really jars me. I don't think the beautiful placement of her hand balances it quite well enough either...

Great comment, and exactly the reaction I was going for with this image. Its good to see that a photo can really make a person think and ponder so much.
I agree that this image does just that, even for myself. The hand does look a bit odd due to the fact that its submerged in water.

correct in the reference to the number of lives a cat has, but go deeper. what is the relevance of the number of lives have to do with this image?
