Description

Drawing dinosaurs is so fun.

This young mated pair of deinonychus (deinonychuses? idk) have found something interesting they want to screech at. Good for them. Not so good for whatever poor fellow is off screen.

The girl at the back is the same one as seen here.  Originally I wasn’t going to do anything with the design (and she was a guy raptor), but I actually love it and I think you all might have to be subjected to her for a bit longer. She’s the feisty one whilst her mate is more laid back. As always, the female of the species is more deadly than the male

Great design!

Just remember, the wings extend to the second digit, and the tail feathers wraps around the whole tail. Other than than, awesome job, coloring is great!

Thank you! And that advice is very useful, I will make sure to bear it in mind when I'm next drawing dino wings! I hope to be as accurate as possible whilst still getting the characterful aspects down

You're welcome! Dinosaur wings are very tricky to draw, I'd advise Tomozaurus's quite helpful guides to feathering arrangement.

aaAaghH this is so wonderful.  Like you I am a dinosaur art fanatic even though I've never actually done any proper piece featuring them, but damn seeing gorgeous stuff like this just makes me so excited to try. Even if it may not be 124% accurate according to the most latest findings (i wouldn't know what those are), I just love the look of them so much. Something about them, their faces especially, makes them seem so alive to me. Alive, like real animals, that are really screeching at something in the distance. Their mouths and eyes especially look very convincing, and that is an artist/drawing trait I greatly admire. Also their poses are just wonderful - no stiff 'look at me being a specimen to look at' stuff, just natural, fluid poses. Awesome, a great inspiration!

I have to be honest I have left this comment for a while before replying because it just makes me so happy. I am really honoured to hear you say that they look alive as that's one of the greatest comments anyone could give! I'm super pumped that you feel life in them. Their stares remind me of my little sighthound dog when she spots something off in the distance that's small and eatable...just before she jumps at the end of her lead. These two have no such trappings!! I really wanted to imbue a realistic impression mixed with the more cartoony aspects of the characters so I am thrilled that you can pick up on that and once again, thank you so much for the huge compliments.

Aaahhh waiting is no problem at all because a) I do the exact same thing and b) it mostly just makes me very happy as well. Unfortunately all I can really say right now is YOU'RE MORE THAN WELCOME, because really you are. Before commenting on this piece here I'd been looking through your art on tumblr and deviantart and it was all very nice but this really took the cake for me. As you say yourself, it's a mix between realism and a more cartoony style, and you hit that mix right on the head. It is a really, really fun piece to look at

Cool. I find it weird that they're given sharp claws to kill and predator or prey, yet they're plant eaters.

Oh these guys were definitely predators! They were also likely to have been scavengers when the opportunity arose. Thank you!

You're welcome. Okay cause I heard that there were plant eaters with sharp claws like theirs.

There was this obscure prehistoric animal called Balaur. It looked similar to Deinonychus and Utahraptor (except it had 2 sickle claws on each foot) and was theorized to be a carnivorous raptor. But then, they found out it was an herbivorous bird.
