Description
This pic is half fanfic, half KiddosNightmareIt was three days after Leafpool's burial. Lionblaze had offered to help Whitewing when Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight proved to be late. The dead cat was already nicely put in the clearing by the time they returned.
The clan mourned, and as he sat vigil, Brambleclaw's eyes fell on the huddled ginger shape by Leafpool's muzzle. She looked completely broken where she lay, almost awaiting the moment when her sister would wake up and tell her it was a bad dream. But she never did.
If Squirrelflight had been down and depressed before, Brambleclaw couldn't even imagine how she would be now. He didn't really like the thought.
This morning, the deputy was up before dawn, arranging patrols and discussing hunting groups. But this morning, he had something to do, so he didn't bother argue with the slightly grumpy Dustpelt. Much to the older tabby's surprise.
Instead, he sat by in the clearing, gazing around. There, she's up, Brambleclaw thought. Squirrelflight emerged slowly from the den, and instead of bouncing off, slumped down into the sunlight. The deputy kept his amber eyes on her.
Am I really doing this? His gaze flickered across the camp, at all the cats present. What would they think? Oh, to StarClan with their opinions.
Awkwardly, Brambleclaw padded to the redpelted she-cat. She saw him, but her head remained on her paws. "Hi," he began. Squirrelflight's emerald eyes blinked curiously, but she wasn't going to let it show. Stubborn, really.
"I was thinking..." he spotted Mousefur and Purdy, who had been sunning themselves, were now watching them intently. The she-cat in guestion raised her head too. He cleared his throat. I am deputy. I will not embarrass myself.
"...whether you'd like to go hunting with me?" he finished at last.
It looked as if every cat in the clearing expected a hairball, or something of that caliber. Firestar had stopped his paw mid-wash, and Sorreltail, about to exit the nursery, instead stood blocking the way for her curious kits in still surprise. The deputy even imagined he could hear snicker come from the apprentices' den. Great.
The silence stretched on, and Brambleclaw fought the urge to shake the uneasiness from his pelt. Squirrelflight remained staring at him, her jaws parted but mute.
"Um...alright," she finally answered, and glanced nervously at the ground. But he didn't miss how her eyes seemed to light up.
As they were about to leave, Brambleclaw looked up at the sky. Just what am I doing?
Cheers to fluffy kindness :3 It's a disease, I can't help it...
