Description
My entry for the Sands of Time contest run by18.07 - Updated with increased shadowing under small figure
ABOUT THE MRI
The Mri are a race created by C.J.Cherryh in her classic trilogy “The Faded Sun” They are humanoid race, but are much taller than humans but their torsos are also much narrower. The have hair that is described as a mane of coarse gold or bronze. Their golden eyes have an epicanthic fold (like oriental humans) and a nictating membrane (an extra membrane that flicks over to protect the eye). They have well defined, high cheekbones, and judging by the descriptions of their ritual scars I think their eyes are also more angled than those of a human. Their ears have tufts of hair at the tips.
Melein is one of the last Mri remaining on Kutath of the red desert and the two moons. She has the blue facial scars of the warrior, but now she has left the warrior caste and wears the gold robes of the scholar caste.
ABOUT THE PIC
It has taken me way too long to finish this image – it is by far the hardest one I’ve ever done. Because I wanted to use a scale large enough to show the eyes I’m working in much more detail than usual. Just finding some of the base pics took weeks! I’ve learned a great deal about making photo-realistic hair, and taught myself to make planets. I didn’t think I’d be able to make convincing epicanthic folds (slanted eyes) in the larger figure so I deliberately chose an oriental model. This of course meant I had to deal with black hair. mizzd-stock’s picture of the maid in the golden gown was just right, except for the headdress – so I had to merge it with another mizzd-stock image.
I know this is far from perfect, but there comes a time when you have to stop working on a pic before you go insane! Overall, I am pretty please with myself

As you can tell by my moniker, am big CJ Cherryh fan. Read and own everything she has written. Your rendering of the Mri, Melein, is extremely well done. Looks just like I imagined her from the 1st book, Kesrith.

Beautiful picture!
Also, my parents named me after this character. Not kidding. And apparently they met the author at a convention when I was a wee little infant thing and she told them they were two of the few people who pronounced the name correctly. X'D

Sorry to take so long to reply - I've been away for a couple of years, and I'm slowly getting through all my messages. Thanks for the comment. You are lucky to have such a beautiful name, and she is a fascinating and incredibly well written character. I used to play D&D with a guy called Thorin (yep as in the dwarf. He's just grateful they decided against calling him Bilbo!

Obviously I need to wander through your gallery more carefully - I don't know how I missed this one, but it's wonderful!

Thanks hon . You're like me I think. You follow and support so many people it's hard to catch up with the backlog in their galleries. I wasn't angling for praise with the link - just showing you what an easy animation of before & after can look like.

Oh, I realize that - I knew you weren't fishing for anything here I just don't know how to do anything outside of cut-and-paste and some basic dodge/burn with Photoshop... but I'd love to learn

I loved the trilogy! CJ creates some very fabulous worlds and people to populate them. You did a wonderful job representing the mri in this piece! Wonderful image

I love the feeling in this one, it really feels like another world, with an alien race. You can really tell how long and how hard you worked on this imagine, I think it's really paid off. This is probably the best thing I have seen from you. The intricacies and depth you put into it are astounding.
The only thing that catches my eye as seeming a bit odd is the top/left of the left planet. It seems a bit too pronounced, making it look a bit like a 2-dimensional disk instead of a rounded sphere. Perhaps a bit of fading at the edges would fix this? or light coming from behind it (although, that may not work well with the rest of the picture).

Thanks so much for this comment. You are right about the planet - I originally made it with a black background, and I had to do a lot of fiddling to make it work with the sky I eventually decided to use. I ended up choosing the least worse one

Yeah it looks perfect on the black background before Oh well, I think it's a very minor detail. It looks truly fantastic
I hope you get the recognition you deserve on this piece

oh, if it's for a competition you shouldn't need luck. It's brilliant! But good luck anyway

nice work...wonderful portrait and colors
Maybe the other woman needs a little shadow under her dress in the sand?

Thanks so much for this comment. I'm glad you noticed the shadows problem. I reviewed the pic again, and realised that after I altered the lighting I lost a lot of the definition in the shadows under the dress. I've increased them and uploaded the new version.
