Description UINEN ~ LADY OF THE SEAS

Of the Maiar Osse is a vassal of Ulmo. His spouse is Uinen, the Lady of the Seas, whose hair lies spread through all waters under sky.” The Silmarillion, J. R. R. Tolkien

This is my entry in the “Complex Creations – Tales of Mythos and Magic Contest” [link] The contest stipulates using stock from six specific artists, plus any extras you choose. Dracoart-stock specifically asked that his stock be very visible which led me to take on this ridiculously complicated idea.

I deliberately chose a woman with a more rounded figure, even though this may be a bit controversial. I have always seen Uinen as a caring and nurturing being, who loves the things and the peoples that live and grow around her waters, both the oceans and the fresh waters … a kind of Sea Mother to match the archetypal Earth Mother. I’ve portrayed her in much the same way as an earth mother – as a maternal figure symbolizing beauty, richness and fertility. Why the texture for the eye shadow? It reminded me of sea colours and paua shells.

This was a horrendously complex image to make, and rather than give a long and complicated explanation I’ve put it in pictures instead. I’ll just mention a couple of things. The waterfalls and lakesides are a complex montage of several different shots, and I made the reflections myself. I’m particularly pleased that I was able to shape the necklace so it follows the curve of her breast.

Thanks so much. I realised I had to use lots of waterfalls to make my entry for the competition, and I remembered the bit about Uinen's hair - that's what inspired me

Thanks muchly for this. The hair was a bit of a challenge for me ... I'm still learning how to do it even after more years than I'm going to admit
