Description
This past weekend myself along with one of my shooting buddies headed out to the eastern plains of Colorado to do some hunting for some good old "rural decay" as I call it. We wouldn't come away empty handed. We found this old abandoned farm and decided to double back to photograph it at sunset. I was thinking that this place may be really lit up against the setting sun and I bet right (for once) The light was completely crazy lighting up the barn that you see here and illuminating the sky behind it, turning it this glowing iridescent indigo blue. How I took it & processed it--- I don't have an ultra wide angle lens and used my 18-200mm for this capture. When I was standing at the lower bottom of the road up to the barn, I noticed that by going as wide as I could, it really accentuated a forced perspective with giving the impression that is shot wider than what it actually is. So going with that and the composition, I took the shot. I actually hand held this capture with only using my CPL and no grads...didn't really need a grad thanks to the light. As far as processing goes, almost entirely done in Lightroom with slight HDR masking in a few areas to bring out the texture & local contrast in the wood of the barn. The road was untouched for this. While it may give the impression of an HDR look and feel, the textures you see are just how my camera captured them. I was rather worried about about the telephone lines but that worry proved unfounded. If anything I am still shocked this place even had power at one time. It has been abandoned for an awfully long time. It sure was gorgeous though!

This is really cool and I just wanted to say that I very much appreciate the technical/processing section of your description. I know it takes time and effort to include it and I wanted to let you know the effort did not go unappreciated. Having said that, I can't believe that the grasses and things on the roadway are unaltered by HDR or other methods! They have so much texture! Nice shot. I love decay, whether it be urban or rural or whatever, I think old things falling apart are so cool.
I am happy to say that I have finally entered the world of Nikon SLRs with the purchase of my very own, admittedly old, D50. I have had it for four days and have averaged 100 shots a day so far. That will drop off some and many, or most, are not winners but it's still fun to finally be playing with my own camera. I look forward to more of your stuff, possibly from this day's shooting....

Thank you! I figure that hey if it helps others then why not. Glad you like it!
Ahhhh the old Nikon d50, a good camera though and one which is quite worthy. Just remember the most important thing is lenses and get the best that you can afford as they last a lifetime. KEH.com www.keh.com is who I use, they sell a ton of used lenses which are all warrantied and will save ya cash too

Hey thanks a lot! I will definitely check them out. I have a brand new prime 35 that I love and use for most things. The camera came with the kit 18-55 and 50-200 plus a sigma 70-300. Any thoughts on these? I think I might sell the two nikkor kit lenses and keep the sigma and my prime. I'll use the money from the other two and save up a little for a nice nikon tele eventually. I think the sigma will satisfy my zoom needs for now. It has a nice macro function that extends its focus range while in the 200-300 zoom range. I just tried it on a cactus I have and it seems to have pretty decent clarity for a 6mp camera body. Here is the link if you are curios...

Colors are telling a story in this image. I only would just remove the wires to achieve a deeper sense of immersion. Very nice shot.

Personally I like the wires myself in it. I debated about taking them out but intentionally left them in as it plays a huge sense of irony that a place which has probably been abandoned for over 50 years has power lines running to it

Fabulous light John! I have to admit, I'd like to see it with a closer crop, I think the barn against the sky in landscape might be more dramatic and really highlight the orange and blue. Just a thought.
