Description
Female Coyote, Rocky Mountain National Park, ColoradoMyself and *Glitch-Chaos were fortunate to see something one doesn't see on an everyday basis...a lone Coyote, hunting, which isn't that unusual, but how about a lone Coyote hunting a full grown female Elk? We were pretty amazed watching this whole game of cat and mouse play out in front of us. The Elk seemed a tad wounded, but in all honesty a full grown female Elk is to large for a lone Coyote to bring down by itself. She would stalk the Elk, charge, stalk, charge, and a few times the Elk would charge back at her. The Elk's hind legs though seemed injured at times. A cat and mouse game between prey & predator. In this shot the Coyote is looking at where the Elk is at, slowly methodically contemplating her next move.
Amazing the things I see, I tell ya!

This is so beautiful. Coyotes are absolutely my favorite animals, Colorado is my absolutely favorite state. I really love the way you take photos--they're always so clear and the colors always so bright and crisp.

Even a lone coyote can wear away at a larger creature..and get them too weak to be able to really defend itself... she' was pretty clever

Excellent shot, John! I like all the pine cones in the foreground as well, 'tis a nice touch in my opinion. I'm guessing the Elk got away alright?

honestly not entirely sure, but my guess is a certain yes, the Coyote disappeared after awhile but they had been at it for quite awhile before we showed up, we could see them running all over the valley long before we got there. I think the Coyote was very hungry to even attempt something like this, and probably exhausted. We were able to get really close at times and she paid us little attention, focusing on her prey the whole time [link]

Ah ok. I can imagine how that could be tiring for her! And wow, you really did get close! So beautiful. She does look tired in that shot if you ask me.

cool shot. coyotes are always soo beautiful.
Is it actually called a LONG coyote or a LONE coyote. You spelt long 3 times in the description and i wasnt sure if it was a typo or something i've never heard of.

Beautiful. I love the focus in her eyes and I can say, no matter the size, I'd hate to be that Elk.

yeah we were wondering if the Coyote didn't receive a few swift kicks as well, and I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of those either lol

I wouldn't either, haha. Coyotes are brilliant animals, though it seems they aren't paid as much attention as their cousin the wolf.
