I believe it's intended as a quick snipe at humanity in general, a snappy "take that" against the species.
You needn't go very far to find people that think humans penchant for self-interest and destruction makes them "stupid".
This does of course neglect a point of reference: IE, what sort of creature do we know of that could be considered "intelligent" as compared to humans?
