I challenged myself to use brighter colours, and try to recreate that strong, warm light of daybreak in summer. Not sure I either succeeded or really like the end result but I had a lot of fun doing this little picture.
(Also - I think I needed to celebrate the arrival of sunlight. We've been waiting for summer for AGES here in the UK!)

The first thing that strikes me is the amazing light and detail to the hair. I can look at it for a long time.

The character herself is scoring quite high in originality because you can tell instantly who painted this, that means you are good at creating original characters that doesn't blend into the sea of paintings we are flooded with on deviantART. Your work always pop out, because of how you paint your characters but also because of the colours you use.

The colours are very sweet and I get the feeling of autumn rather than summer but I don't mind (and I'm pretty sure it doesnt matter, the story is about the girl and not the weather really that is used more as a lovely frame).

The balance between everything looking quite foggy instead of dreamy is a hard thing to achieve. Her red hair helps though, but I still would encourage to maybe have this in mind. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="357" title="Heart"/>

The theme is subtle so the rating on "Impact" scored lower but then again it's a sweet soothing painting and I guess you weren't going for OMFG WOW-factor.

As always, very well mastered technically.

Finally for a tip: I guess what could be improved is to dare to relax a little, it's so much work I think this dreamy motif could benefit from a more loose approach.

Great job! Love your work always xoxo

Thanks sweetie!
I agree with you that I should really relax more... after almost an entire year with very little darwing, I am very stiff and rusty and it shows in the flow of my lines! I need to practice!

Oh you got the SKILL girl! I think it's just about trusting your skill from here I don't think you are rusty at all, maybe just a little bit anxious but then again its the curse of the artist right?

Ahah well I really think I am also a bit stiff. Or maybe I'm just idealizing my before-break drawing flowiness?
Anyway, thank you!

To start with I love your work,

It's not the mot uniqe pice but it has a realy good outline and you did really good with the coloringBut the dark part that start in the middle of her neck I really don't understand that part of your artwork. And it took away a little of the light feeling of the pice. But the way you draw people is a not the most common way to draw people so it makes i it a little more uniqe.
I wish that you mabe had done a little more with the three and the flowers e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

basically, what I was going to say. Love the coloring and line work.
the shading was a lil odd. if it was low on the horizon, it would be flat against the side. Her neck exaggeration might be a bit too much. Still enjoy your work

Thank you for taking the time to critique!

For the dark part: I was trying to reproduce the light of the sun when it's really low on the horizon, and the light is almost horizontal, leaving anything below a point into the shadow. But I agree with you it looks plain odd, it's too flat and would need more dimension for a better effect!

And the picture is quite simple but arguably, it was a small picture to loosen my hand - not meant to be a full-blown illustration. That's for next time!

I don't comment much on your work, but you are one of a handful of artists that I follow (mostly, I hang out on the literature side) and I always enjoy your work. I find this one to be particularly charming.

Is it terribly original? No, but it really doesn't need to be. Your style is so well defined and your technique so well developed, that this just works.

Wonderful work with the shadows, the warm colors, and her tilted face - the contented look on her face is spot on. That is exactly how a fresh, warm morning feels, and even without the title, I would have known that this was morning.

the intricacy of her hair is absolutely stunning and I adore the length of her neck.
This stylisation is really very pretty and delicate and I dig it. Plus that little orange highlight on her cheekbone is a very nice way to incorporate the oranges of the fruits. Fantastic work!

what kind of fineliner do you use for your drawings?Β

I guess you also used watercolour for your paintings, but whenever I draw the outlines, it smudges really easily.

I wonder how to prevent this smudging.. could you help me? Thanks

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KmyeChan In reply to LuckyCupcake [2013-10-08 09:54:23 +0000 UTC]

I use mostly Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens and UniPin Fine Line pens (plus some random Staedtler pigment liners and Copic multiliners). None of these bleed with watercolors for me (if I let them dry at least 15-20 minutes before adding paints). If you find that they smudge, it may be that the paper you are using is not absorbent enough.

I really love the lighting. It's very dynamic and yet still soft...?

I definitely get the feel of a sunrise from it, by the lighting and tone of it. My first impression was of Fall, actually. But it's warm and bright and definitely fits Summer too, even if it wasn't my first impression. (Probably, though, it only reminds me of Fall because I live in a damn desert and that's when it starts to get warm haha!)

I think my favourite part of it is the texturing, though, without a doubt. Very subtle but it makes a huge difference!

Great detail and shading, I think the angle of her neck is a bit odd, maybe make her neck shorter. I love the style, and the colors you used work well in this picture

the light is so beautiful! I love the oranges and yellows! I love that you can almost smell what she is smelling. my only issues is that the green has too much blue in it - the leaves look old and dry. New leaves are more yellow-green and let the light thgouh just a little. But this is a very small issue because the feeling comes across anyhow just beautfully.

I have been watching you for years but I'm not sure I've ever posted a comment on your gallery... anyway, it's ironic because the reason why this picture caught my eye in my devwatch alerts was the warm oranges β€” very visually refreshing and not something I see a lot with markers.
