Description
Here's the final piece:I've been asked a couple of times to do a watercolor tutorial, so, here's my best shot at it.
There are lots of ways to watercolor cartoon images. This is just my own technique. I hope you find it useful, or at least interesting!

Thank you for making this! I've dabbled with watercolour but because I've never been formally trained in them I tend to use them like acrylics with. . .varying results. This was really informative!

Thank you so much for this. It was interesting to see your way of working, and the bit about shading clothing was especially useful for me. I find that sometimes very challenging to work out, but I think this will help me out greatly. Thank you~

Really nice walkthrough! I have a question. Do you recommend drawing a picture in pencil and then painting with watercolor paint? Or should I ink the drawing, erase the pencil lines after I've inked it, and then paint? I've only painted a few small things, and I was never sure what I should be doing. I ended up inking with Sakura micron pen and then painting. But then I'd need to re-ink because the paint would make the ink look faded. I was always afraid painting over/near pencil would somehow mess with the paint color. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Okay! Here's what I do:
First off, I always do my sketch on a separate piece of paper. Then I use a lightbox to trace the drawing onto the really good watercolor paper. I do this because erasing on watercolor paper can ruin the surface, so you never want to use an eraser on good watercolor paper. Also, it's helpful if I screw up, and then I haven't ruined my only sketch (And boy have I screwed up before! Ha ha...)
But, regarding your actual question, whether with ink or pencil, I will always go back and "re ink" after I paint, because it is pretty inevitable that you'll cover some lines up.
You can paint right over pencil (this is what I did in this picture) but the important part is to use a "hard" lead pencil. You may know this already (sorry if you do), but art pencils generally come in "H" grade and "B" grade, H for Hard, and B for Soft (or probably something that starts with a "B" IDK, it's soft, though!) I use a 4H (sometimes 3H or 2H) pencil to "ink" my watercolor paper. Since the lead is hard, it is a little lighter, but it won't smudge or get in the paint when you paint it. If you used a normal mechanical pencil, or a soft B lead, when you painted over it, it might smudge and make your paint grey.
After I paint, I go over the linework again, either with a 4B pencil this time (because it's darker), or a micron.
Hopefully this was helpful! Let me know if there's anything I didn't answer clearly.

You can use a light box with nice watercolor paper? I always thought it would be too thick!

As long as the room is dark, it actually shows through just fine!

I'm actually considering taking a watercolor class at the local art museum. I really want to learn more about it xD
