Description
The Dinorwic slate quarries were one of the biggest open slate quarries in the world - in their heydays. Today they are a massive scar in the mountains opposite Snowdon. The rails were part of the incline system which transported the slate from the quarry via a rail system down into the valley to the railway there and then the the nearest harbour. About 90% of the slate in the late 19th century came from this or some of the nearby slate quarries. Dinorwic closed in 1969.Related content
