Description
Artwork I made of some aircraft programs from around the world that were cancelled for some reason or another:-----
Lockheed CL-400 Suntan - Designed as a potential replacement for the U-2 Dragonlady, the CL-400 would have been a reconnaissance aircraft capable of traveling at Mach 2.5. Research and development of the design took place from 1956 to 1958. It was to be powered by liquid hydrogen and fly at an altitude of 30,000 meters (98,500 feet).
Reason(s) for cancellation: Insufficient range, monetary issues, fuel issues.
-----
Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden - An unusual pusher-prop configuration, the Shinden was designed to be an agile interceptor capable of attacking B-29 Superfortress bomber aircraft. With a top speed of 469 miles per hour, it would have been one of the fastest aircraft at the time. Two prototypes were built, one of which took flight. Production never occured.
Reason(s) for cancellation: Ending of WWII.
-----
IAI Lavi - An Israeli multi-role fighter jet, the Lavi featured all-moving canards, delta wings, ventral fins, and a single afterburning turbofan. It possessed fly-by-wire controls, and advanced avionics including self-analysis equipment. Two prototypes were constructed and flown.
Reason(s) for cancellation: Insufficient finances, pressure from the US government, questions of cost-effectiveness.
-----
Sukhoi T-4 Sotka - The T-4 was a Russian aircraft resembling a hybrid between the XB-70 Valkyrie and Concorde. It was designed as an interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft capable of reaching Mach 3. The nose of the aircraft was mobile and would cover the windscreen during flight, but was lowered during take-off and landing. A periscope was used to see during flight. Four prototypes were built.
Reason(s) for cancellation: Budgetary compromises to buy fighters instead of T-4s.
-----
SNECMA C.450 Coléoptère - A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighter jet, the Coléoptère featured a unique annular wing in place of a conventional wing. A single turbojet powered the aircraft. Due to the aircraft's design it could only take-off and land vertically and conventional take-off and landings were not possible.
Reason(s) for cancellation: Prototype crashed during a test flight.
-----
Focke-Wulf Triebflügel - Possibly one of the most unique aircraft designs of all time, the Triebflügel was designed to be a VTOL interceptor. A ramjet-powered, free-spinning rotor assembly would have provided lift for the aircraft as well as directional thrust. The tail would have provided pitch and yaw control. The aircraft only made it to the stage of wind-tunnel models.
Reason(s) for cancellation: Ending of WWII.

IAI has actually hinted that the IAI Lavi may be getting back on track because they need a new conventional fighter to pair off with the F-35s they're purchasing.

all great planes... or at least bizarre planes in some cases XD
excellent work! X3

It never ceases to amaze me just how many amazingly advanced aircraft designs the Germans intented towards the end of WW2, given the horribly desperate circumstances under which they were conceived

Yes, the Nazis seemed to be rather creative in terms of proposed aircraft designs. I'd like it if a modern version of the Triebflugel was constructed. Just to see how well it would have worked, you know.

your T-4 unalike on real plane. Notice that nose of this plane movable, similarly Tu-144, and in flight closes the cockpit. Here is as on this photo

Good drawings in general that

Yes, I realized that. I just like the way the plane looks with its nose drooped. In my mind, perhaps the T-4 in my picture just got finished taking off and hasn't lifted the nose yet.
And thanks for compliment.

They're all very nice ^^
I especially like the Lockheed's design. The idea of running on liquid nitrogen is an interesting concept. Too bad it was cancelled.

Thank you.
Liquid hydrogen, actually. Liquid nitrogen doesn't burn. Nonetheless, the SR-71 Blackbird has superior speed to the CL-400 Suntan and it was actually constructed and flown.

That's an interesting bunch of airframes, Kryptid.
The quality of the artwork is impressive as well.
