Description
This map was made for the Map of the Fortnight contest over on AltHistoria, which you can find here:Β althistoria.proboards.com/threβ¦I don't have a full, detailed explanation of this world - I put this together quite quickly and need to get it submitted now in order to meet the deadline - but the short version is that the British are not successful in the French and Indian War, though they win the Seven Years War overall, so France keeps its North American holdings and the threat of French invasion averts the American Revolution. Revolutions break out in Europe even without the American one as inspiration and soon these revolutions spread to the Americas, resulting in the independence of most of Spain's colonies. Chile, notably, is able to defeat the less organised countries around it to resolve border disputes in its favour, quickly becoming a regional power. With no United States to settle, democratic and stable Chile becomes an immigration magnet (of a sort), leading to rapid growth and development in the country. Its naval prowess is unmatched in the Americas, and it uses this to expand its national interests in the South Pacific, first siezing uninhabited islands with sizable guano deposits, and later asserting suzerainty over various Polynesian states. As the description in the image says, Chile's empire reaches its height after it and Mexico beat Spain in a large war and Chile gains most of Spain's holdings in the East Indies. Unfortunately for Chile, this is the "height" of its empire, as in the 20th century it is increasingly eclipsed by its friend and brother, Mexico, and soon there will be war in the family again.

I think the invention of wire as a medium for electricity predates the independence of Chile, I'm afraid.

Amazing work! I really like how you've made it look like a textbook.

Thank you! The textbook look was something of a last minute decision - I orginally intended the Pacific map to be as wide as the main map, so I could include it underneath with no empty space off to the sides, but that didn't work out, so I hastily wrote a short description and put it together as a textbook at the last minute.

You're welcome. For a last-minute decision, it works very well.

Thanks! Though this is alternate history, so this map isn't factual I'm afraid.

Thanks! I'm glad your Chilean friend likes it, though I try to avoid fueling national rivalries.

Okay, good. Ever since my Turkey map got legions of Turkish nationalists complaining in the comments I'm wary about people perceiving my maps as political statements.

Oh thatΒ΄s normal, yesterday I made a joke picture about Angela Merkel and the refugees
and someone called me an evil Nazi, because I donΒ΄t agree in his views^^ ThatΒ΄s nothing
new for me XD
Just think, only stupid kiddies take such a picture so serious, that they rant, insult you and
then block you like a coward before you answer. Very entertaining, DA never becomes boring^^

Thanks! I'd love to see your take on a Chile with Patagonia - one of the things I had planned to do for this map but didn't have time for was Chile's coat of arms/emblem, and I think you're definitely better at those than I am!

Beautiful map there man.
Is the rest of the world more Latin focused due to what is (I'm assuming) a more powerful Mexico eclipsing the United States?

Kurarun In reply to Todyo1798 [2016-01-31 22:46:40 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
Yes - Mexico does come to take the place of the USA as an industrial juggernaut and superpower, so Spanish rather than English comes to be the global Lingua Franca after the decline of the British Empire, and the world is more focused on Latin America as a result.

So Britain is still top dog for now?
Was the US balkanised at some point or is it just in some extreme isolationism/sulking at not being able to beat up Mexico? Β

At the time this map is set (1901) Britain is still the pre-eminent world power, but it will decline throughout the 20th century as Mexico takes on the USA's place in history.
The USA doesn't exist, at least not in any recognisable way. I'm unsure exactly what happens in North America, but the Thirteen Colonies mostly don't make it past the 1763 Royal Proclamation line. Most likely they're a dominion that will gain effective/full independence in the 20th century.

Ah, that should have been obvious from the description.
Ah well it still leaves a great deal of room for maneuver in the way of butterflies if you ever wanted to expand on this idea.

Indeed! I probably will expand on this timeline later - it's based on a few previous ideas I've had for maps, so there are definitely some good opportunities for interesting maps in there.
