Description
Water-soluble India/Acrylic Ink + WashesI used to find morel mushrooms with my dad when I was little; we typically went in early spring, when it was rainy and still pretty cool (Ohio). Still needs a lot of work and touch ups (added fog digitally), so I'd love to hear any suggestions

A very nice piece of work!
With its pale colours it even has some magical qualities. It would not at all be wrong to see a unicorn or a pixie peeking out from behind a bush (although that might well turn it kitsch). Especially the digital fog adds to that effect.
I like the play with the textures. The tree bark looks far from real, the leaves are more a wallpaper than a three dimensional images. All that gives it wonderful illustration qualities. Indeed it would perfectly fit into a children's story.
Thinking of a children's book illustration - one reason why it so looks like one is that it is missing any focal point. It is nice but it not yet tells a story. It looks like an illustration to work with some text. As a stand-alone it is so far a picture with a void. Filling it could be anything: may be father and son looking at the pale sun between the trees, may be a raven swerving, a squirrel looking. May be the wee girl could look at a (moderately) brightly coloured toadstool or a big black beetle, or ...
Great picture. Now it wants that one finishing element.

Thanks for the great critique!Β
I look up to a lot of illustrators from the Arts and Crafts movement as well as the Golden Age of illustration, so that probably explains my wallpaper-ish textures and magical feel (though I'd never really noticed it in my work before).
The focal point does get lost in the haze; my eye always goes towards the sunlight beaming towards the fog- I probably shouldn't have brightened that area so much. The drawing is about harvesting morel mushrooms, which can be difficult to find in the forest. I placed the morels in the bottom right corner and had the girl pointing at them to draw attention. However, they could easily be missed; maybe I could find a way to draw more attention to them without making the shrooms too obvious.Β

It's s cute. It gives me a children's story book vibe, as if it could've been a book I'd read back then.
