Description
Someone wanted me to show how I draw comics on Photoshop, so I did! (Yes, it is a Korean version)I use Photoshop CS5 but I think any Photoshop version (provided they have the tools mentioned in the tutorial) work just as well. I cannot help SAI/GIMP users much...
Please also keep in mind that if you wish to draw comics perhaps more professionally, there are better tutorials out there. This is a very very rough and simple one that I am used to.
Enjoy!

EDIT: Oh goodness...thank you for the DD ;w; I am happy this little tutorial is very helpful!
EDIT2: I have added a mini tutorial on how I do thought bubbles in this post

Hello! Making tutorials is hard work and I think it's admirable that you desire to assist your fellow artists. However, I'd like to critique some things if that's okay with you! Everyone has room for improvement.
Maybe you were just skipping some steps, but most any professional comic maker will agree that drawing a comic page starts with drawing thumbnails. Even if they are tiny, sloppy, and not at all detailed, it's the best place to start. It's best to thumbnail many pages in succession so that you may get a feel for how the pages flow. I would NEVER start a comic by haphazardly placing panels to fill. Thumbnails are a good, quick, easy way to figure out what's going on where on the page and to make the story flow the best.
I am all for messy, loose sketches. That's why they're sketches! And I know this is by no means a drawing tutorial, but just regarding your art and comics in general, I would highly suggest you work on gesture drawings. That punching panel does not look like a punch. It looks like she's very awkwardly sticking out her arm and it's touching N's face. There's no shame in looking up references! It doesn't matter if you don't have a realistic style. Even the most "cartoony" (I use that term lightly) or caricatured styles need to adhere to some basic anatomy. These panels could have been made a lot more dynamic if you'd looked up a few good punching references and put more energy into her pose.
I like your use of sound effect text! I think your dialogue placement needs a little work too, though. That's another thing that thumbnails can really help with. If you figure out where your dialogue balloons are in advance, you can avoid a lot of the awkward crowding and overlapping that's going on here.
I noticed you shade your comic quite a lot with black on lighter opacity. While I think that's okay for some lighting situations or in small quantities, it looks a little cheap to do all the time. I am all for flat, simple colors when it comes to comics since I know coloring is an exhausting, time-consuming process, but at this rate, I would even recommend shading with a darker tone of the base color over black opacity. Black capacity makes things look mucky and just unpleasant.
I hope this helps!

Well if I were a professional comic artist or considered being one, I probably would have done this tutorial...differently.
For the fancomics I am currently working, I have had a knack for just drawing the comics from head to paper/photoshop so I never quite bothered for a thumbnail.
As for poses, they always will improve over time. I have, for the most part, not have a huge active effort to draw my poses better but I am slowly getting there. I am aware of my limitations and will eventually reach a better drawing state.
Finally on toning, I actually do this style largely because it is the most efficient for me. I like making these fancomics; but since they are not going to be published on print, I have not made a huge effort to make a better lighting scheme. I do try to "elevate" the tones by not using black but it can only go so far. I know other toning techniques but due to my preference for efficiency I use that. If you browse deeper into maybe my maplestory fanart on I do use a different style of toning compared to the current.
Thanks for the advice, which I will keep in mind; however since this is largely a hobby and not a first-priority goal, I cannot promise that I will suddenly change my style overnight.

Sure thing. You should enjoy your art and I understand it not being a priority. But if you make a tutorial, that implies you're giving people a step-by-step guide on the best way you know to do something, and if you're in a position where you're guiding other people to do something a certain way, you should be sure it's the best it can be. Professional or not, anyone can stand to practice and improve at the things they do, and the pros do things the way they do for a reason. I doubt any of them try to make things harder on themselves!
Every artist is different and needs to find what works for them, but you have to realize that there are many other inexperienced artists who will take your tutorials at their word. If you make a tutorial, your steps can either help or harm a fellow artist. If you just want to show people how you do things, I'd preface the tutorial with that. "This is just how I do this, and not necessarily the right or wrong way." "This is just showing my process."
Your coloring on your maplestory art is a lot nicer, but like I said, of course I don't expect you to put that level of detail into a casual comic. I just think that the "darker shade of the base color" method is not much harder than black opacity and looks better. Just a suggestion though I'm not telling you to change your style by any means!
Anyway, I just thought I'd drop my thoughts here. I know critiques aren't always the most fun thing to hear, but they are ultimately good for you! Especially since you said you don't get this kind of thing often. Everyone improves on their own if they keep working at something, but trust me, you can improve a lot faster if you take pointers from someone else as well.

Ah yes, I do realize those artists - including myself - have done so (take tutorials word for word, that is).
I'll make a "Before-you-read" section soon; that would certainly help
Lol from the few art courses I did take, I do realize critiques range from boring to scathing but honestly, I enjoy the few I get online.
Again, thank you for the feedback, and hope to hear from you sooner or later~

I wanted to know how people draw comments in general, like, which order. Can you ever tell us, how do you plan out a comic? Like, how do you write the story board?

Really nice but... well, i'd like to know more.
First of all, i like how you presented a good way to present us how to draw internet comics (used mostly for fan comics, though), but reading your ID you are supposed to be a student and comic artist, right? But those sketches referred as "messy and silly" are more like sketches made by animators. Have you ever made a "serious" animation?? (because some mistakes [link] as animation)
Returning to the comic topic, are offical comics drawn like this (in a much more complicated way)? Are comics always drawn before on papers or some can be made directly on computers?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ky-nim In reply to Dinomar-de-Contis [2011-08-16 15:50:26 +0000 UTC]
Okay.
This is mostly for internet fancomics yes. I am not an art student but just a pre-med student who has a long-time digital art hobby. I dabbled a little bit in animation but honestly I do not plan to be an animator.
I feel like official comics have a different method, but this is the method I came up with over time, and I plan to continue it. I know several artist peers who prefer to hand-draw them and scan.
