Description Speedpaint-ish thing I started months ago and decided to finish.  Wanted to try out were!Fred's new colors while playing a bit with the proportions to look a bit more monstrous, as well as see how quickly I could make a (very basic) background that doesn't look like utter shit.

The thumbnail looks way more like a were-hyena than the full picture. Up close, the proportions are solid.

Yay, more werewuffs! I love were!Fred's new colors but the pattern makes Fred look less like a wolf and more like a hyena or painted-dog. The hunch on Fred's back adds to the hyena, so making it a little less thick might make Fred look more like a wolf. Also if you're going for monstrous I would make the hands and feet even bigger. So besides that I really like the way the rest of it looks.

True, and it's semi-intentional.  Fred's people keep hunting dogs that look a bit like African painted dogs, so her design is partially a callback to that.  I like the idea of different werewolf appearances per race to reflect their regional origins, though it wouldn't really make sense in my setting.  We'll see.
I think the hind feet probably ought to be bigger though, yeah.

That's actually really cool! So would each one of your races have a different werewolf form? Cause I would love to see what they would look like. :3

I'd like them to!  It wouldn't reaaally make sense based on the origins of lycanthropy in my setting, but I might just roll with it anyway.
I'll probably draw them eventually, now that you mention it.  Need more werewolf practice.

Well maybe not completely different designs but incorporating traits from your different races. Like the Pagosi and the An'Thetians might have a more fox-like appearance, since both races have the possibility of having red hair and the An'Thetians have pointier ears and whatnot.

But whatever you do it'll be awesome to see it! :3

Awwww, she still has her cute dorsal stripe. o//w//o
In any case, the Fred's colours look quite pleasant, especially against that nice misty background.

Also, I'm never quite sure what to do with proportions, along with the gaining of mass or fur when it comes to werewolves, and shapeshfters in general...for my neglected headworld at least, but I digress.

Yep owo
Thanks!

The mass thing is part of my problem, too.  I'd like to keep the mass relatively constant between forms but still have my werewolves look at least a little intimidating, haha.  Without gaining size, that means either altering the proportions to just look really creepy...or adding lots of fake bulk via fur.

...Fred's gonna end up poofed up like an angry Persian cat by the end of this, geezus.

Yeah, I want to make shapeshifter animal forms that look impressive in the size department, but also relatively believable. I always want to use magic as a reason, but at the same time I want to challenge myself to learn how to proportion things differently with the same mass rather than have extra mass added via magic or other unexplained phenomenon. But in any case, I quite like Fred's look.

Hmm.  If you do want giant animals but don't want to just say "it's maaaagic!" you could always rearrange the magic system of your universe so that it seems logical.  Like...maybe instead of the shapeshifter physically morphing into the animal, muscles and organs and all, it's almost like a summoning sort of thing?  Like maybe there's some sort of spectral plane that holds all the world's aspects and what they're actually doing is like...summoning the "essence" of bird, or whatever.  Or any number of other "logical" explanations.

I'd highly recommend the webcomic Unsounded for a magic system that seems to "make sense" because it has a specific set of rules that work within its own universe.  Actually I just recommend Unsounded in general, it's super great. owo

Looking at the proportions and posing, they honestly make me think more of a hyena then a wolf. Suppose that's just me though.
