Description
3 different species of proboscideans meet in a river in the early Pliocene in what will become South Africa, the animals present at the site being the gomphotheres (or mastodons?) Anancus capensis, along with an incoming herd of prehistoric African elephants: Loxodonta cookei, and a solitary male Mammuthus subplanifrons.Drawing inspired by a study published in April 2020, which analyzes the reason for the presence of 3 species of large mammals belonging to the same taxonomic order: Proboscidea, in South Africa during the early Pliocene, since being such large animals and in based on modern African elephants (with such large populations of specimens in large herds) would have required an enormous amount of food all 3 species, and based on an analysis made of the molars of the fossil remains it was concluded that Anancus it would have been an animal of wooded and closed areas, while Loxodonta and Mammuthus would have been animals of open areas such as the savannah, which is why it is suggested that it may have been one of the few taxa to survive, since climate change occurred in the late Pleistocene it would have caused the extinction and disappearance of the forests where Anancus lived, and perhaps some type of specific plant that consumed Mammuthus and disappeared during the end of the Pleistocene was what caused its extinction. It is also known thanks to the location of the remains that the animals would have shared the same water sources, therefore they would have been commonly found.
