Hey Lady,
First of nice modeling...
When I was at Collins College in Tempe Az, studying animation, we learned Maya 4.0 during 2002 and then in early 2003, we upgraded to Maya 4.5. I even had Maya 4.0 on my laptop as a friend had given my a copy so that I could go home and work on class assignments. But over the months that followed, my Maya stopped working altogether and my laptop became slow and so I had to delete Maya from my laptop( Here it is 8 years later and really want to start working on Maya again and MAYBE actually FINISH a personal project and maybe eventually make a kick demo reel. The problem is that I don't know where to find Maya and lost contact with my friends from Collins College. Anyway, it's nice to meet somebody who has the same interest in Maya as I do. You can contact me here or through my email dave.landers@gmail.com

Hey! Thanks for sharing this tutorial! I've been looking every where for one that's short and to the point. Most I've found only show the product and not the process!

man you saved my life, been in china for the past 3 weeks and had to get my animation at a decent stage before getting back to university to show lectures what I had achieved.
Been searching the net, high and low, even youtube doesn't have a decent tutorial on using blend shapes, and thank goodness you came up on google, the day before I am due to fly back.
Now that I have done your tutorial, I am really grateful, you're my hero lol
many thanks [link]

Glad it was a help.
Quick question: Do you think it would be beneficial if I made a new tutorial for 2010 utilizing blendshapes in a facial rig with driver driven controls and an explanation of painting weights? I made this tutorial four years ago so it might be time for an update. Then again, it remaining simple might make it a better asset.

This is a very informative tutorial! I really like it a lot. Most blend shape tutorials I've found only work with the head but you duplicated the entire body. If you rig the body with joints and everything, does the base model still keep that body rig while the face is using blend shapes? Just curious because that would help me a lot with a recent project. Thanks for the tutorial!

Naw, I've never had any problems. The blendshapes only effect the vertices I selected. In any case, if for some strange reason, your whole model wants to follow the blendshape (which really shouldn't happen) you can always paint the weights on your blendshapes setting their weight to 0 so they no longer react.

I've been working with Maya for about 2 years, and I remember reading some confusing tutorial on Blend Shapes that I followed and it made no sence, but this is very well written and easy to follow. Good job. If only I had it back then

Ga, this is a great tutorial. I'm new to Maya, and my 3D modeling teacher demands that we finish certain assignments but doesn't give much help. Blend shape was on of these said assignments. ><
This really helps a lot, though. Thank you for making this.

I've been using Max for 3 years and I just started using Maya to get better character animation, this was really useful.
Thanks

Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your comment. I haven't had a very consistent internet source for awhile.
As for your question, [link] is an excellent place to find tutorials.

Ooooooooooooo.........a UV texturing tutorial!!! Gimme!! That is my BIGGEST weakness in Maya right now. I can animate fine, I can model fine, but when it comes to texturing.....bleh. Bad bad. You wrote this Blend Shape tutorial marvelously!
I already knew how to do that, but hadn't done it in a while, and needed a little tune up.
This tutorial was just what I needed to get refreshed.
Can't wait for that texturing tutorial!

You're the second person who's brought up the UV tutorial so I think it's about time I got started on it. ^^ I'm gonna be spending some major time texturing tomarrow, so it should work out great.

May i ask what Maya is? (I'm completely enthralled by animation and this has sent me up the wall ) And i cannot spell for the death of me

Maya is, in my opinion, the best 3-D animation program there is. I know lightwave and 3D max users would argue with me, but Maya is number one. ^^
It takes a little while to get the hang of it, but once you do you can create just about anything imaginable. You can give it a try with their learners addition:

Just click "Get a free Maya Trial" and you should be good to go. ^_^
Have fun! If you have any questions just let me know and I'll try to help.

Where were you three years ago!!!!
When i was in college we used Maya 4 as our base 3d modeling and animation program. I would have KILLED for a tutorial about Blendhshapes!!!!!!! Though I got the hang of it, it took ALOT of fiddling (our teacher was too busy with his own manuals and such to actualy 'teach' us to use the program properly, We had to figure everything out on our own)
Excellent work!!!!!! *favs* This will come in handy when I start 3d again!

No prob! If you need any tutorials, all you have to do is request. I'm currently working on a UV texture tutorial for one of my friends, and I'm more than happy to touch base on anything else that could be useful to others working with Maya.
Thanks for the comment and fav. ^^

Hmm well I know a tutorial that Alot of Maya users could use. Weighting. I could never get it right without either causing my character models to implode or become the elephant man in some way.
It's so nice to see user friendly maya Tutorials online. i would have seriously killed for something like this years ago!

I think it's a pain in the butt for everyone..there's nothing worse then thinking you have something weighted properly then finding out your arm eats itself when you move it up or dow
I would love a tutorial of it, I'm sure other Maya users would as well ^.
