Description
The wolf lowered its head, whining and backing away as if in shame. Isolde felt something in her chest twinge.
“Poor beast,” she whispered. Evans applied pressure to her arm.
“We best be going now, Miss Marlowe. There’s nothing more to see.”
Isolde faced the man, removing his hand.
“If it’s all the same to you, I would like to stay here for a bit.”
Evans shot a questioning look at the wolf. Haddock-Wolf looked from Evans to Isolde with his golden eyes, then laid down on the floor and thumped his tail. Evans sniffed.
“Very well.”
Isolde would have considered the whole exchange comical if it was happening in a book. It was different in reality. The butler left the room and shut the doors behind him with a little too much force than was necessary. Isolde slowly moved closer to Haddock-Wolf. He watched her as she seated herself in front of the blazing fireplace and held out a hand to him. Haddock-Wolf was still softly whining. Isolde ducked her chin.
“Don’t be shy,” she said with a smile. Haddock-Wolf shuffled up to her in only the kind of way that a canine can and gingerly touched his nose to her hand. Isolde’s smile widened as she felt the wet surface on her palm. She ran her hand over his head and behind an ear, scratching it. Haddock-Wolf closed his eyes and pressed his head into her hand, tail slowly thumping.
“I’ll let you in on my secret,” Isolde said as she scratched the scruff on the side of his head. “I found out you were a werewolf a fortnight after your mother hired me. She wasn’t feeling well one day so she took a nap and left me to wander the estate. I wanted to know more about the derelict wings of Haddock Hall, so I led Evans—whom your mother had appointed as my “keeper”—on a wild goose chase and slipped through the boards put in place to discourage people like me after I lost him in that wonderful labyrinth in the garden. I saw the claw marks and thought that something was inhabiting those abandoned wings until I found an old study and all those parchments and journals. I know it was horribly rude of me, but I was curious, and mysteries have always intrigued me, so I read them. I thought it was all nonsense until I began to put the pieces together. Your mother declining to have me come every full moon only confirmed my suspicions. Naturally, I assumed you had inherited the “family affliction” too, and by the way you acted towards me at that ball, you only made it more plainly evident.”
Isolde paused.
“I know you’re wondering why I pursued you so much, hm? It was mainly because of something your mother had said. She talked about you so much when you were gone…she still does, but that’s besides the point. She described a kind young man who loved his mother and did his best to live up to his father’s memory, but it was what she didn’t say that intrigued me the most. What she didn’t have to say was that you never get close to anyone because you feel like an outcast, so you keep them at arm’s length or just shove them away. She blamed it on your “affliction,” but I think that’s just one ingredient in the problem. The other was that woman you refuse to talk about. I haven’t pried into her out of respect for you; I’m waiting for you to tell me about her, and if you never do, that’s fine with me. I’ll admit that at first, I thought I could be something more than a friend to you, but I’ve since realized that that was foolish and you need time to heal, so I’ll settle for just being someone there you can share your pains and secrets with without having to worry about trying to hide part of yourself from me…It’s unhealthy to be alone, Mr. Haddock.”

First - Previous - Next
This is short but hopefully the week after next's story will make up for it! For those of you who thought Haddock was going to turn into your run-of-the-mill werewolf--NOPE! The werewolves in this universe are different, mainly being that there are those who let the Wolf Side take over completely when they change, and those who have learned to balance it with their Human Side. The act of maintaining an aspect of humanity can be passed down so that the following generations are more "tame" werewolves. What little human intelligence that those who turn themselves over to the Wolf Side is used to hunt humans with more precision. I have five more snippet finished, along with the accompanying sketches that I need to color. I'm getting to the part that I've been anticipating writing ever since I introduced Sir Drexel *cough*WoLfFiGHT*cough*

I'm new to this story line, but I really love this scene--both how you illustrated it and wrote about it! As others have said before me, I love your take on the werewolf, too. Very unique and logical view of werewolves, I think. It follows more closely to human nature. Can't wait to see more of your work!

Thank you so much, and welcome to the story! I always had it in mind that the werewolves in this world would look like actual wolves from the start of this project. I'm glad you like my little spin.

Aww! This is a really tender scene- and Haddock in wolf form is adorable! So different to the terrifying wolf-man hybrids that you normally see, and I respect you all the more for not going down the obvious route here.
It's good to finally understand some of Isolde's motives as well and see her confess a longing for something more from Haddock, but being willing to settle for friendship. I agree, it isn't healthy for him to be cooped up like that all on his todd!
I like the soft, fuzzy lines and golden blur/overlay you've used for this picture to enhance the intimacy of the scene. I also love the way that they are staring at each other, there is such an understanding there. Haddock's shame at becoming a wolf in front of her fits in well with his reserved character too. Great work!

Right from the very beginning I wanted the werewolves in my universe to be more realistic, which is why I figured I'd go with making the wolf form more wolf. Plus I personally think it would be scarier to get attacked by a huge wolf with the intelligent mind of a malicious human *cough*Drexel*cough*
Both Isolde and Haddock are going to go through some character growth while putting up with Sir Drexel, getting to know each other a little more along the way too.
Thank you! I wanted to show that even though Haddock is a wolf, he's not a mindless one. Yeah, he's a lot of fun to write because of his anxiety with hiding this "other side."

Ah the grand reveal, and the confession, I wonder if she suspects that Drexel is a werewolf as well, and how she might take that revelation. Was Daddy Haddock a werewolf too, or just Mummy?

Haddock sort of clued her in that Drexel is a werewolf back when they started their Fake Courtship scheme--she'll get some more definite proof later on though.
Both Mummy and Daddy were werewolves! I figured that the Haddock line has had the werewolf strain in it for quite some time, and Mummy was from another wolfy line (also a wealthy family). The werewolf families tend to marry into each other in hopes that they won't infect their offspring if they married a regular human (though Drexel is another case...). I have some sketches of young Mr. and Mrs. Haddock that I'll get around to coloring and posting on here sometime this week.

HE STILL HAS THE EYEBROWS. <3 Man, I love them so much. I was real sad when I saw that Maelstrom was on hiatus but this story is tiding me over nicely

He wouldn't be Haddock without his Signature Brows! I really hope to get some more Maelstrom pages done now that I have this week off--it all depends on how fast I can finish up my animation, which takes priority since I need to finish that class to graduate!

Aw, the way you described their interactions made me smile. Haddock-Wolf is just a great big pupper. (I mean, a dangerous one, obviously...but cute nonetheless. ;v; )
I also love the picture! So sweet!!
I think she made a good decision. You can't force your way into a wounded heart. All you can really do is be there for them.

He's a big softy, though you'll get to see that dangerous side of him when Drexel and Haddock go at it in Wolf Form!
Thank you!
Yep, yep. Isolde is learning how to navigate her way around her new friend.

This was a really sweet scene. I like how she realized that pursuing him romantically was a foolish decision and decided to just stay friends. That's a very mature decision to make.
I also like the picture that accompanied it. That scene of them both silhouetted in front of the fireplace looks like it could be iconic.

Thanks! I tend to like stories where the couple gets to know each other before they decide to become romantically involved. Haddock might have a change of heart later on though...
I had this image stuck in my head for this part for the longest time--I'm glad you like how it turned out!

It did seem somewhat clear from the previous chapter that he wasn't going to go savage. After all, if they do go savage, it'd make more sense to lock them in a cellar than a house.
