Description Final project from my Intro to 2D Animation class last semester--yeah, way back in May. Took me that long just to build up the courage/get enough distance from my own embarrassment to put this up here. In a way I'm still kind of proud of it: just seeing what I managed to do in, oh, 6 weeks or so? in a class I "took" just because I wanted to learn animation... but obviously, I bit off way more than I could chew, and realized just how far I still am from becoming anything close to an animator.

Please don't critique this for the animation or concept or composition; I know it's poor, rushed, cheesy and disconcerting. Most of it makes me wince. I know I really, really need to practice depth.
But, well... I guess, I just really wanted to show you this roughest version of the animation I WANTED to make. I did this for my final project because this is what I dreamed of every time I listened to this song. This is Ian's song, and Ian's beginning. I'm not even sure if I want to keep this idea--it's cheesy as hell, I know, but for now it's what I'm running with until I can come up with something better. The concept's gonna stay the same either way, because this has always been a story of the fall. For those of you who've been following Angel Dust (bless you guys, seriously), maybe this'll help illuminate something? I hope it adds a little to the story.

The song is "One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go Of My Fears," by sleepmakeswaves , used with their permission in this animation. You can listen to the unedited version here , and even download it if you like! Thanks again to this band for letting me use their music; it's the whole reason this animation even exists.

For anyone who spotted the cameos, they are: ~shark-bomb 's Tudor, =theblackbutterfly 's Obizuth, and of course a Cris from AD . And yes, I did look up Treasure Planet's intro scene a million times, but no, this was not actually inspired by it. This is the beginning to my own story, Angel Dust: [link]

Put together with Photoshop CS5 and Toon Boom Animate Pro. Also available on Vimeo, here

Thank you everyone for the support, you guys are the best!!! ♥

Awwwwwwww, well, that's terrific!! You're looking into animation now, or already in college thinking of studying it??
Thank you so much for the super-sweet comment!! ♥

I'm an art major right now (though we'll see about that, with the way things have been going with some of my teachers ), but our school doesn't have an animation program, mores the pity. So I've been trying to teach myself how to animate for quite some time now.

Awwwwwww, well, good luck however things work out!! What about transferring to another school? 8O
Animation is all about timing and anticipation! I only took the 2D Into class but I'd be happy to give advice/crits if you want them! Or the assignments we did in class, if you want something to work on. :3

Khyansaria In reply to Laitma [2012-09-28 01:12:32 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, assignments would be useful.

And I can't transfer-- this school is my place. I just don't know if my teacher is helping or hurting right now. But once we get into longer projects, I think she'll help. So...

Laitma In reply to Khyansaria [2012-09-28 01:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I'd love to help! Well, for one thing, our professor basically taught us out of the "Animator's Survival Kit" [link] so pick that up if you can!

For assignments, the first was a bouncing ball, showing squash&stretch while maintaining mass, and how the ball's arc is slowest near the top. The second was to show an object falling from the top of the page to the bottom, often people chose to do a leaf. (I did... a bird... xD ) There's also throwing a jello cube at a wall, animating 2 different "emotions" on a flour sack, lip syncing, and of course the walk cycle. Ahhhhh, the walk cycles. xD
Anyway, how's that for a start? C: A lot of it can feel a bit silly, but it's really useful for learning the basics of animation. The most important things to do are to be able to conserve mass (make sure your objects don't shrink over time as you draw!) and to be able to anticipate actions. Try to put pauses before a major action/reaction, it helps us expect what's coming. Ummm those were the most important ones I picked up, I guess, hahah!

Ahahahahahah, I just love drawing Obizuth that much, she's just scampered into all my doodles! Hope you don't mind!! xD

And ahhhhhhhh but you studied animation!! You know how much work I still need to do with depth and all that... but, gosh, still so glad you liked this, praise from someone who did animation for a while is the highest of all hahahah! ♥

It's all the music, I swear! I just drew what I always saw whenever I listened to this song, so I timed it very very carefully with the music. ♥
Thank you for the super-kind comment!

TaishoTan In reply to Laitma [2012-09-28 16:47:08 +0000 UTC]

But to blend in with the music and the emotion seems hard especially when the hand moves to draw seems so slow...u are able to capture each image with the tune, and that's not easy...Great job^^ Love to see more of your animation.. I could learn a thing or two from you..thanks

Laitma In reply to TaishoTan [2012-09-30 16:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Awwwwww, thank you so much!! It's just a lot of fiddling around and pasting scenes around in the end to fit it precisely to the music, I swear!!
I'm definitely still working on little animations, though no big projects for now, sorry. xD But someday, I do dream of formally finishing this one-!! *o*
Thank you!!

Hahahahah, and I learned firsthand just how much work it is!! At first I was all, "pssssh, how hard could 3, 4 minutes of animation be?" Oooooohhhh, how wrong I was. xD
And ahhh seriously, thank you so much for the super-kind comment! That the concept/story came across so well really flatters me, thank you!

but yes LOL I quickly learned that too, it too me bout 4 months to do a simple flash e-card for my college -> [link]
drove me mad @.@

I really hope to do animation like yours, it has so much meaning and power behind it all.

The comments are all well deserved to you and i'm sure you know it. I even recommended this video to be shown in my Uni Lectures for my Animation class; now everyone gets to see it

WOW, this is really great! I was hoping to see this more finished but I see it's not gonna happen. Too bad.
I also wonder why you don't feel capable of doing animation, you did great on this one of what I can tell. Unless you just don't feel like doing it, too bothersome and timeconsuming maybe. I know it's my main reason why I never get my lazy ass to do more of it. I learnt VERY little animation myslelf and did even less on my own and never anything at this level with angles, motion and bg all, telling a story and everything. So I'm impressed with what you could accomplish in such a short period.

The song is great I am really considering to purchasing it.
Oh and I also love those scenes from Treasure Plante (I guess that's my fav Disney movie of all times anyway). XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to AnticiaJK [2012-09-27 02:48:06 +0000 UTC]

Ahhhh, I do dream of ONE DAY re-doing this/completing it, but that day is loooooong and far in the future, hahahah! I need to get a LOT better before this'll end up anything like what I wanted it to be... @_@;;

A part of it is definitely just how strenuous the process is. I feel like animating is really hard because I don't have a solid grasp of depth/perspective/composition, so a lot of the shots look really wonky. I don't know how to make a figure recede properly into a page, and I have a LOT to learn about framing shots/cinematography. Timing I feel like it something I can get right over time, but depth is hard. As well, I don't have a lot of confidence in my lines, so it's all really sketchy. I can't get those super-smooth slow scenes down, my lines jiggle too much hahahah.

Right now I guess I'm just more interested in illustration and narrative, but I do wanna get better at animation too, if I can tell a story with it!
And hahah, the angles/perspective and stuff is actually easier than you'd think?? Since animation's so rough and quick I find that, once you take the initiative to try more dynamic angles, it might feel messy but when you let the animation run it tends to work more often than not! I hope that made any sort of sense, sorry, I'm not very eloquent... @_@;;

And hahah, Treasure Planet is one of my favorite movies, if only for those kickass flight scenes~ xD

AnticiaJK In reply to Laitma [2012-09-30 11:48:27 +0000 UTC]

Aww I see, allright, hope you will do yome day.

Hehe, it really intimidates me. but I badly want to make some "clips" to musics I like, and I saw some "messy" still amazing animations so it ispossible eventually i also get over on this issue and kick myself to do so. XD;

I see. ^^
Yes, yes it did make sense, hm, it's good to hear then because such things that I hope to get away with - and really cannit with a still picture.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Laitma In reply to AnticiaJK [2012-09-30 18:39:39 +0000 UTC]

Mmmn absolutely, go for it!! C: It's hard to do a long animation without a kick in the ass like a class to push you through it, though... xD But clips are fun, and I have plans to do some clips myself! o:

Thank you though, the best compliment of all is seeing how much some people enjoyed the story/concept, since that's the core of the whole thing.
