Description
A tail is a characteristic that I feel clearly represents the majority of the animal kingdom. With few exceptions, nearly all other creatures have a tail in one form or another. Developmentally, all human embryos have tails which, for the vast majority of the population, are gone by birth.I consider the back and spine to be one of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of the human body. In this piece, I tried to preserve that beauty despite the obvious addition of a tail. This piece was an experiment. When I took the stock photo, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. It took me several months, however, to muster up enough patience and time to sit down and try to build a tail. I had initially set out to build a thick, reptilian-style tail but as I drew the initial shape, I felt a smaller, thinner mammalian style tail would blend in more naturally with the model's physique. The most difficult part was matching the lighting but I feel like it ended up looking pretty naturalβ¦for a tail anyway.
I also pointed the model's ear and made other minor modifications. Expect minor revisions.
Manipulated with Photoshop 7.0.
Stock photography from my personal collection.
***Update***
Several people have pointed out that the tail was positioned too high on the model's back. This is something that I was aware of when I posted the image. My rationale, other than the fact that this image is an experiment, was that clothing covers the actual end of the model's spine, where a tail would sprout. Despite this, however, I have managed to lower the tail as much as possible and am overall pleased with the results.

Have you seen the movie "Ginger Snaps"? This sort of reminded me of it.. What happens to her.
Nice picture though, really nice, but I do agree that it would be better if it was a bit lower. But still, this is awesome.

Whoa that is a very intresting concept that you have thought about.
I really like how you were able to make the tail so realistic, it almost looks like it is really there.
The photo overall is very good, I love how the lighting is. Lovely work.

I'm not sure you'd really want a tail if one were to really begin growing on your backside.
I'm glad you like the manipulation though

first thing i thought about when i saw this was Ginger Snaps, dont know if youve heard of it but its a canadian horror/comedy werewolf movie. In mid-transformation, the main character grows a tail and its just like that.
Thats great photo-manip work though, looks like it wasnt touched up at all.

I thougt this was real.. But off course I read the description. Amazing how you did this, I can't believe it's possible to do things like this with some photomanupilation programs (like photoshop 7 ?!) I'm just a beginner and I'm very busy with learning how to use photoshop by myself. Maybe I need a teacher, I wish you were my teacher
It's freaky, wonderfull, amazing, beautyfull and a great piece of manipulation!

Thank you for the kind comment! It took years of practice to learn how to do this stuff but I find it quite enjoyable.

How did you learn this?
From a book, a club or just by yourself?
It's also enjoyable to look at!

WHen I first started I just taught myself. Later, I took classes when I was an undergrad student then went on to get my masters in a related field. I used photoshop everyday.

Wow..
So you really took you're time to learn it?
I'm 'teaching' myself right now, sometimes I use some advice from the internet or a book but I really want to do amazing things with photoshop, I don't think I ever can do such amazing things as you do but I really want to know more.
SO.. I love you're work.

It's the kind of thing where you can always learn more. A book is a good idea. Tutorials work well too. The real trick, though, is to practice! I'm sure you'll figure it out and do great stuff!
Thanks again!

Thank you, It's nice to hear that from a 'master' photomanipulator!
Sometimes I lose my patience when I'm trying to practice things like Photoshop, drawning or other things, but I really gonna try this!

It's positively beautiful......you have AMAZING skill. I agree with you, the back and spine are gorgeous, as are the thighs. The model's a little skinny for my taste, but that's ok, it helps with the tail effect. I love this.
