Description
A tail is a characteristic that I feel clearly represents the majority of the animal kingdom. With few exceptions, nearly all other creatures have a tail in one form or another. Developmentally, all human embryos have tails which, for the vast majority of the population, are gone by birth.I consider the back and spine to be one of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of the human body. In this piece, I tried to preserve that beauty despite the obvious addition of a tail. This piece was an experiment. When I took the stock photo, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. It took me several months, however, to muster up enough patience and time to sit down and try to build a tail. I had initially set out to build a thick, reptilian-style tail but as I drew the initial shape, I felt a smaller, thinner mammalian style tail would blend in more naturally with the model's physique. The most difficult part was matching the lighting but I feel like it ended up looking pretty naturalβ¦for a tail anyway.
I also pointed the model's ear and made other minor modifications. Expect minor revisions.
Manipulated with Photoshop 7.0.
Stock photography from my personal collection.
***Update***
Several people have pointed out that the tail was positioned too high on the model's back. This is something that I was aware of when I posted the image. My rationale, other than the fact that this image is an experiment, was that clothing covers the actual end of the model's spine, where a tail would sprout. Despite this, however, I have managed to lower the tail as much as possible and am overall pleased with the results.

Thank you! That's very nice of you to say. The model isn't quite that skinny in real life

Sorry. Just awestruck at how cool and realistic that photomanipulation is.

Tadpoles lose their tail too. Really, I wonder what human tails would be like if they kept them. Would they be just skin, or would they have hair?

Good questions. I think some peoplw would have hair on them and some wouldn't. I'm guessing women would shave it if they did.

I'd leave mine hairy, and braid it or something.

I was more thinking of leg-hair type hair rather than long fur-like hair.

Hm... Yeah, then that would probably be shaved.

nice manip.
in fact, some human keeps their tail because the bone that ends the spine (at the level of the pelvis) was once followed by a tail that mother earth and evolution thought useless (the fonction creates the organ and not the contrary).
This phenotypical spΓ©cificity is called "vestigial tail" or "vestigial caudal appendice"
One good exemple is shown on the second season of the TV show NIP//TUCK

You wouldn't know what episode of Nip/Tuck has a vestigial tail in it would you?

tsuki-no-namida In reply to lessthanhuman [2006-06-06 22:57:32 +0000 UTC]
it is during the second season, episode 8 "Agatha Ripp"
This episode is about a woman that wants to go under the knife to remove her stigmatas.
She was a prostitute and scarified herself in order to be recognised by a dioscese.
She's worshipped like a saint and at some point, a couple comes at McNamara//Troy (the clinic) to have their baby touched by Agatha. Instead of it, the two surgeons operates the baby for his(her) vestigial tail.

EXCELLENT manipulation. The lighting and coloring of the tail is perfect, I think. Or, at least, really, really close to it. I'm quite impressed.
