I think it has to to with league rules. In my head cannon the league determines how muh you win or pay. And you can by league licensed items (or find) that Shane the rules for you or your PokemonΒ

It think it works like this:
You have an amulet coin which is really valuable so trainers would be willing to pay double to get that amulet coin (if they win and you lose).
