I think the way it works is that the coin makes you lucky. Β Therefore, that extra luck means you're opponents are carrying more cash, thus they pay you more when you lose.

Theres a luck incense that you can buy at the location where there are a lot of boats docked. It has the same effect as an amulet coin.

Inside the Parfum Palace (y'know, where you have to go get the PokΓ©Flute to wake up Snorlax), go to the second floor and check the fireplaces (A) and you should find one. Give it to a PokΓ©mon to hold and you'll earn double prize money.
Alternatively, you can buy Luck Incense in Coumarine City and it works the same way.
